Abstract:  The first example of a fluorescent highly stable pure binary ionic liquid (IL)-in-water emulsion is here described. The system is inexpensive, easy to synthesize and can be used as a selective fluorescent probe for metal ions. In particular, the system is able to recognize Fe3+ ions in pure water by a fluorescence “turn-off” mechanism.
