Objectives

In the laboratory converge the design disciplines of Restoration and Architectural and Urban Design, which focuses on historic buildings - monumental emergencies such as the so-called minor architecture - and more generally on their urban and rural landscapes. The laboratory is built on the dialectic between the two components of the project, design and preservation, called to face and to cooperate in building a common perspective, recovering the organic and culturally wide dimension that has been the characteristic of the architect for a long time.

1 - Mod. Design
We consider the perspective of integration between design and preservation of great importance in contemporary times: nowadays, new interventions from scratch are decreasing and, due to the global crisis and to the sustainability issues, interventions on pre-existences are becoming urgent. Therefore, is strategic being expert in a declination of design oriented on the reconversion and enhancement of the existing stock. This it is not just a practical condition: the same design paradigms can count less and less in an absolute and autonomous vision of design, seeing instead the action of designers as the application of punctual and partial strategies, derived from the comparison with a built context, characterized by the presence of pre-existing artefacts and landscapes. This module therefore assumes as intended learning outcomes the theoretical knowledge, as well as the effective experimentation in the development of a real design case study, of the major paradigms of design in comparison with a pre-existing environment. The educational objectives of the module are the knowledge and laboratory experience of the main design paradigms that operate in comparison with the pre-existences, experimenting the 'modification' as a critical action, aware and careful to landscape values of artefacts and architectural and urban complexes.

2 - Mod. Restoration
The main goal of the Restoration module is to enable students to tackle an architectural restoration project, from the analytical phase to the final proposal. This is done based on an adequate knowledge about traditional building techniques, architecture history, innovative detection methods and diagnostic procedures, chronological and stratigraphic methods, analysis of diseases and causes of weathering, methods of intervention and restoration techniques. With specific reference to the planning phase, in addition to solving technical issues, we will focus on cultural issues, i.e. the relationship between old and new, as well as the modern principles of compatibility, reversibility, distinguishability and minimal intervention.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to coordinate and carry out a restoration project at the architectural level - not apart from the urban and territorial context - based on contemporary ways to design in technical planning terms, and with a
careful recognition of the peculiarities of the construction and the context in which one operates, to ensure the continuity of history.
In detail, this module will concern on critic-cultural questions and significant topics of the contemporary debate, illustrating the tools for dating historical buildings, the assessment of values as well as showing cases study at the different scales.

Prerequisites

1 - Mod. Design
Students must have passed the exams and design laboratories of the previous years and must have a good basic knowledge of modern and contemporary history of architecture.
For the correct and effective development of the design module students will also need to know and master the main design and representation software, such as Autocad (Educational) and photo editing programs, as well as a three-dimensional modelling software. The three-dimensional images of the project can be processed using photomontage techniques and not necessarily through photorealistic rendering tools. A good manual is required in the production of models and study models that will be constantly used as a tools for the design and development of the project during the semester, as well as for the final representation.

2 - Mod. Restoration
The course requires a good knowledge of the theories and history of restoration, with particular focus on practices deriving from different ideological models that have taken place during the evolution of the discipline, from its beginning up to the post-war period. Furthermore, the student needs technical ability within the survey and the representation, theoretical grounds and practical experience in the architectural design, in material analysis and in diagnostics, developed in previous university courses included in the specific academic frame.

Contents

The integrated laboratory consists of two parts: design and restoration. The student will have to carry out a unique project with a single theme, developed bringing out the specific components of the two parts. The exercise will focus on a specific site including historical buildings and/or consolidated landscapes, aiming at their restoration and possible re-integration in a useful cycle-life, both for artefacts and their contexts. This goal is pursued jointly thanks to the continuous dialectic between the two disciplines that are considered in the laboratory organic and convergent. During the phase of design, particular attention is paid to the issue of accessibility for all.

1 - Mod. Design
Theoretical contents of the design module deals with specific issues relating to the relationship between Ancient and New (architecture and landscapes). Lectures will be divided into theoretical contributions, about the foundations of the heritage project and in specific communications on emblematic case studies.

Teaching Methods

1 - Mod. Design
The design module will be articulated through lectures, seminars and laboratory activities.
Teachers (designated or invited) will offer ex-cathedra communications in the first hour of lessons and then they will guide students in the development of a design case study. In alternation to communications lectures on texts and case studies design will be organized with the direct participation of students.
Projects that will achieve the most mature results might be developed as a final graduation thesis being guided by the teachers of the laboratory.

2 - Mod. Restoration
The typology of the Restoration lessons is varied. Overall, they consist of a series of lectures held by the professors that hold the chair and by some guest professors. To carry out the theme of the year, the lessons will be alternated with field trips and workshop activities in the classroom.

Verification of learning

Students with attendance equal to or higher than 75% will be admitted to the exam.
The evaluation of the student's work will be defined on the basis of the following elements:
- attendance and active involvement in educational activities;
- assessment of the knowledge of the theoretical issues and with the topics discussed during the course.
The design project will be assessed in relation to the themes characterizing both the two parts.

WORKSHOP
The theme of the laboratory will involve all the different parts of the integrated course and will consist in the critical analysis and in the design of an historical architecture.

1 Mod. Design
It will be assessed:
- the ability to read and interpret the specific qualities of pre-existing environment (buildings as well as the characters of the landscape which are part of);
-the intelligence and appropriateness of the reconfiguration of the designated use;
- the strength of synthesis and expressiveness of the design project; the autonomy of the student in developing the design work.

2 - Mod. Restoration
In addition to the before written for the design module, the student will be assessed the coherence between the phases of assessment of heritage values and building analysis with the design choices, the degree of material and functional compatibility achieved by the design solutions, the level of development achieved on the definition of conservation interventions, integration and enhancement.

More Information

To carry the theme of the year, the architectural building chosen, already surveyed and drawn, will be updated if necessary and investigated considering:
- Design part: the spatial and morphological point of view, identifying the main architectural features, the relationships between the parts and the relationships with the context;
- Restoration part: typological, historical and stratigraphic analyses, individuating the values (spatial, formal, material and memorial), essential in order to define an aware project.

In detail, the final output of the workshop consists of comparative analysis with other architectures, typologically analogous, historic-chronological synthesis and maps related to the material and weathering analyses
The laboratory activity will be carried out with the division into working groups consisting of no more than 3 students with similar career commitments.
