Objectives

The main goal of the course is to provide students with all the indications concerning the restoration site. Applicative aspects will be presented in detail without leaving the theoretical and administrative aspects, fundamental for every building site.
The topics of the course, mainly focused on the practical aspects of the restoration site, regards the building techniques of the existent built heritage and the restoration techniques related to the executive aspects and the monitoring of the interventions. Specific case study, object of intervention, will be presented.
Several field trips will be organised on Regional restoration sites.

Prerequisites

The course requires a good knowledge of the theories and history of restoration, with particular reference to practices deriving from different ideological models that have taken place during the evolution of the discipline, from its inception up to the post-war period. Furthermore, the student needs technical ability within the survey and the representation, theoretical grounds and practical experience in the architectural design, in material analysis and in diagnostics, developed in previous university courses included in the specific academic frame.

Contents

The topics developed during the course are:
Concepts, cultural sectors and professionals in the field of restoration;
Professional and tasks in the two phases of design and execution of interventions;
Relationship between project and execution, the designer and director of the restoration site;
Current laws and rules;
Constructive and material knowledge of the building;
Management of interventions;
Executive restoration project;
Production of graphic elaborations for the study and project of the executive restoration site;
The restoration sites;
The execution of the works sites according to the metric calculations;
Interdisciplinary operative tendencies;
Preliminary investigation and diagnostics;
Craftsmanship and workforces;
Material supply;
The safety on the restoration site;
The maintenance after the intervention of restoration.

All these arguments will be showed on their application on a case study. The exercitation concerns the deep investigation of previous restoration projects and the design of a new intervention with highlighted the executive phases with the implementation of the open source MIBACTs informative system, SiCaR/web.
The course enables students to the use, implementation and design of SiCaR/web with a final certificate of attendance and proficiency.

Teaching Methods

Le lezioni saranno articolate in didattica frontale, visite di studio a cantieri pilota con il coinvolgimento di liberi professionisti e funzionari tecnici operanti in pubbliche amministrazioni, docenti visiting professors ed esperti nazionali ed internazionali. In alternanza alle comunicazioni saranno organizzati seminari di discussione di testi e casi di studio progettuali con la partecipazione diretta degli studenti. In particolare, lo studente sarà tenuto a produrre la documentazione relativa al cantiere di restauro di un intervento da lui stesso progettato, basandosi su quanto appreso attraverso lo studio dei cantieri pregressi.
L’esercitazione potrà anche essere svolta nell’ambito di workshop intensivi dedicati.

Verification of learning

Students with a presence equal to or greater than 75% will be admitted to the exam.
The evaluation of the student's work will be defined on the basis of the following elements:
- Attendance and active involvement in educational activities;
- Assessment of the knowledge on the topics addressed and discussed during the course;
- Laboratory.

In the case of laboratory work particularly valuable from the scientific perspective it will be evaluated the possibility of sending the results of the study the scientific community through participation in conferences or seminars, national or international inherent in the discipline of restoration and conservation.
