Course Curriculum CFU Length(h)
[80/72]  ARCHITECTURE [72/10 - Ord. 2017]  ARCHITETTURA, PAESAGGIO E SOCIETA' 3 30

Objectives

This course aims to bring architectural and urban design practice to the level of theoretical knowledge, which, rather than pretending to be scientifically certain and irrefutable, aspires to understand, describe and narrate the "Design Cultures" (starting from the design) that characterized, with no interruption, the debate on architecture and the city during the second half of the twentieth century.
It is therefore evident that the reference to the concept of "theories", rather than of a "theory", relates to the recognition of a plurality of ways through which the architect's action has been able to build, over time and in space, the modification of multi-stratified landscapes.
In accordance with the provisions of the Dublin Descriptors (I-V), the student who has attended the course will acquire the following knowledge and skills:
I. Knowledge and understanding: the student will acquire knowledge of the main theoretical orientations that characterized history of architecture and related design fields during the twentieth century.
II. Applying knowledge and understanding: because of the concepts learned, the student will be able to interpret physical contexts and to promote a more conscious modification of places.
III. Making judgments: the student will be able to express an independent and critical judgment of the spatial quality of urban projects.
IV. Communication skills: the student will acquire the ability to communicate the acquired knowledge, using an appropriate language, relevant to the historical pre-existences.
V. Learning skills: the student will be able to apply the acquired knowledge and understanding in the future professional practice, characterizing it with a specific aptitude for the investigation and interpretation of the design contexts.

Prerequisites

Students must have successfully attended the "Laboratory of Theory and Architectural and Urban Design" and developed a satisfactory theoretical and practical background on design. More specifically, it is required a good knowledge of history of architecture of the twentieth century and a solid critical thinking on design and on tools for reading and analyzing the urban form.

Contents

The central theme of the course is the history of design's cultures, starting from the twentieth century. Specifically, the course educational path addresses the most interesting experiences in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, arguing the passage from the conceptualization of the notion of "type", to the application of the "model" and, subsequently, the "rules", showing three moments: the great "urban design", the utopias of the neo-avant-gardes, the "unitary project".
The topics are guided by critical readings of texts that have particularly 'marked' these moments of design, founding the cultural dimension of the project.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity is divided into lectures, seminars for the presentation of books and reading / analysis of projects, carried out by the professors of the course and by external teachers and experts called to contribute on specific topics. Moreover, students are assigned readings of theoretical texts, which are lectured by them within discussion groups applying the method of role playing.
