Course Curriculum CFU Length(h)
[80/72]  ARCHITECTURE [72/30 - Ord. 2017]  ARCHITETTURA E SOSTENIBILITA' 4 40

Objectives

- Knowledge and understanding:
The course aims to provide students with the knowledge of the visual and acoustic comfort in buildings, with special attention to issues of verification the same comfort in confined historical environments. This objective will also be achieved through the use of advanced textbooks, as well as consultation of advanced research in the topic object of study.
- Applying knowledge and understanding:
The course will lead students to apply the acquired knowledge in the proper use of transparent materials and lamps for the visual comfort, as well as in the use of high-performance acoustic materials in the design of a new building's enclosure or in the upgrading of an existing building.
- Making judgments:
Students will acquire the capacity to interpret the data related to the main parameters of acoustic comfort and lighting of confined environments. They will be able to formulate and solve problems proposed by demonstrating an adequate autonomy with respect to the specific competencies of their future professional context.
- Communication skills:
The student will acquire the ability to communicate and express problems concerning the object of the course. It will be able to hold conversations on the specific issues of lighting engineering and acoustics, knowing how to apply the notions acquired in historical building contexts.
- Learning skills:
Students will acquire the full understanding of the basics of acoustics and lighting engineering, acquiring the ability to face and solve numerical problems on some specific topics, as well as to apply the basic cognitive tools for continuous updating of their knowledge.

Prerequisites

The students must know the basics of Applied Thermodyamic, regarding the acoustic properties of materials and the optical properties of transparent materials. All lessons will be held in Italian, so it is necessary to understand the Italian language to take advantage of the course and to use the teaching material provided by the teacher. The teacher is available for explanations in English.

Contents

The objectives include the training of students in acoustic comfort and lighting engineering for residential housing in general, with specific application to historic buildings. The course program provides the following topics:
1) Presentation of the course and final exams.

2) Regulatory aspects regarding acoustic and lighting technology
Noise pollution as expressed in Decree n. 447/95 and related implementing decrees. Equivalent level index for noise assessment. Passive acoustic requirements for buildings, their components and installations as defined in DPCM 5/12/97. The mean daylight factor and lighting ratio. The topics will be dealt with in about 4 hours of theory.

3) Lighting engineering
The vision of the light, the luminous flux, the fundamental photometric magnitudes. Natural and artificial lighting. Architectural lighting architectural parameters according to UNI 11630: 2016. Lighting control in the interior, for lighting technology. The topics will be covered in about 6 hours of theory and 9 hours of exercise.

4) Applied acoustics
The sound phenomenon: preliminary notions and main acoustic parameters.The propagation of the sound waves in open field: noise from road and rail traffic. Assessment and control of environmental noise.
Sound in large environments, acoustic properties of materials: sound insulation and sound absorption. The reverberation time in confined spaces. Sabine and Noris Eyring formulas for reverberation time. Main explanatory descriptors of speech intelligibility. Evaluation of the acoustic performance of building components.
The topics will be covered in about 9 hours of theory and 6 hours of exercise.

Teaching Methods

The course includes frontal lessons, with the help of powerpoint presentations, for preparatory training part of each topic. The subjects discussed will be applied by students in special "in situ" acoustic and lighting engineering experiments as well as in the preparation of a design elaborate that will be discussed during the exam.
All the teaching materials needed for the development of the elaborate are made available online to all students in a appropriate cloud. All the course is personally taken care of by the teacher. Some lessons and exercises will be carried out in synergy with qualified personnel in the lighting and acoustics sector.

Verification of learning

During the year students will apply the notions learned in a group design exercise. Verification requires an oral test in which the student's design exercise will be discussed, assessing their knowledge of project regulatory parameters, as well as the knowledge and/or the simple return of what is contained in the bibliographical material provided by the teacher.
The vote of the oral test will be included between: 18 and 22 for elementary and ineffective exposure understanding; 23 and 27 for a good understanding and a clear exposition; over 27 for a full and brilliant exposition and effective understanding.
The final vote will also take into account the assiduous and proved participation in the design process.

Texts

For the preparation of the exam, it is sufficient to refer to the lessons and to the material provided by the teacher. For further details or for self-study, we recommend the following texts:

- G. Moncada Lo Giudice, L. De Santoli, Benessere termico, acustico e visivo, Casa Editrice Ambrosiana;
- G. Moncada Lo Giudice, Illuminotecnica, Ambrosiana;
- P. Fausti: Acustica in Edilizia, Rockwool Italia;
- P. Ricciardi: Elementi di acustica e illuminotecnica, McGraw-Hill.
All tables and diagrams to support exercises are provided during the course and shared in a special cloud.

More Information

Power Point presentations will be used for projection of regulatory technical requirements. All material will be made available to online students on a special cloud.
