Objectives

The design disciplines of restoration and enhancement of architectural heritage converge in the laboratory, which focuses on historic buildings - monumental emergencies such as the so-called minor architecture - and more generally on their urban and rural landscapes. The laboratory is in fact built on the dialectic between the components of the design and the restoration project, called to compare and cooperate to build a common perspective, recovering that organic and culturally broad dimension that has been the architect's own for a long time.

1- Mod. Design
We consider the perspective of integration between design and preservation of great importance in contemporary times: today, new interventions from scratch are decreasing and, due to the global crisis and to the sustainability issues, interventions on pre-existences are becoming urgent. Therefore, is strategic being expert in a declination of design oriented on the reconversion and enhancement of the existing stock. This it is not just a practical condition: the same design paradigms can count less and less in an absolute and autonomous vision of design, seeing instead the action of designers as the application of punctual and partial strategies, derived from the comparison with a built context, characterized by the presence of pre-existing artefacts and landscapes. This module therefore assumes as intended learning outcomes the theoretical knowledge, as well as the effective experimentation in the development of a real design case study, of the major paradigms of design in comparison with a pre-existing environment.

2 – Mod. Restoration
The main goal of the course is to allow the student to upgrade his personal knowledge and skill in order to cope with a complex architectural restoration project, in coherence with theoretical principles, sectoral legislation and administrative authorization procedure.
- Knowledge and understanding: the student will acquire the ability to analyse, with a historical-critical approach, the architectural artefact and the historical urban systems, based on the available documentary sources, the direct analysis of the sites, also through the stratigraphic methods and instrumental diagnostics. He will also be able to consciously assume the responsibilities of the design choices in the perspective of the conservation of authentic historical matter and of the possible modification, both functional and formal.
- Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: with reference to the aims of the restoration design, the student will be able to identify and choose the most appropriate cognitive and diagnostic methodologies and investigation tools for understanding the historical artefact and its context, and to conduct a targeted selection of techniques intervention based on the operational practices of contemporary restoration.
- Autonomy of judgment: the student will develop the ability to identify and understand the values of pre-existences and the role of the contemporary design in the conservation and enhancement process, to apply the acquired knowledge in a mature and conscious way and to contextualize the experiences, identifying in autonomous way sustainable, appropriate and innovative solutions.
- Communication skills: the student will develop the ability to communicate with an appropriate vocabulary - written, oral and graphic - technical and scientific contents in the field of restoration in archaeological, architectural and urban field.
- Learning skills: the student will have the ability to integrate the knowledge acquired in the field of complementary subjects learned throughout the educational path, in order to achieve a transdisciplinary and multi-scale vision of the problems related to the practice of architectural restoration.

Prerequisites

1 – Mod. Design
Students must have passed all the exams and design laboratories of the previous years and must have a good basic knowledge of modern and contemporary history of architecture.

2 – Mod. Restoration
The course requires a good knowledge of the theories and history of restoration, with particular reference to practices deriving from different ideological models that have taken place during the evolution of the discipline, from its inception up to the post-war period. Furthermore, the student needs technical ability within the survey and the representation, theoretical grounds and practical experience in the architectural design, in material analysis and in diagnostics, developed in previous university courses included in the specific academic frame.

Contents

The integrated laboratory consists of two modules, one of design and the other of restoration. The student will have to carry out a unique design with a single theme, developed bringing out the specific components of the two modules. The exercise will focus on a specific site including pre-existences and / or consolidated landscapes, aiming at their restoration and possible integration for a full insertion in the useful life cycle of the artefacts and of their contexts. This goal is pursued with unity of intent in the continuous dialectic between the two disciplines that are considered in the laboratory organic and convergent.

1 – Mod. Design
The theoretical contents of the design module will address specific issues related to the relationship between the new construction and interventions on pre-existing environment (buildings and landscapes). Significant cases will be illustrated and will be discussed together with the students.

2 – Mod. Restoration
The course deepens, through explanatory case studies, the different approaches of the CONTEMPORARY RESTORATION and the protagonists of the conservation theory and practice in the late twentieth century, with specific regards to the modern schools of restoration (principles, outcomes, commingling, and compromises).

The restoration project will start from the ACKNOWLEDGE PROJECT, based on the encoding and interpretation of literature, iconographic and archival sources, and the preparing of the historic and illustrative report, as enshrined in legislation (10 hrs). Methodologies and tools for specific purposes will also be illustrated during this step:
- Stratigraphic analysis for the comprehension of the architectural evolution of the buildings and for their relative and absolute dating.
- Analysis of degradation and of material and structural consistency;
- Plans of diagnostics;
- Identification of elements with historical-artistic interest and their mapping (cataloguing and Raumbuch)
- Assessment of values related to material and immaterial aspects.

Based on the knowledge outcomes and in the light of the specific regulatory framework, the PROJECT OF RESTORATION (20 hours) will be developed, methodologically divided into the following focuses:
- Identification of problems to definition of possible solutions;
- Identification of conservation techniques;
- Analysis of compatible functions and definition of possible reuse programs;
- Design of adaptive or integrative interventions;
- Plan and design of Adjustments and improvements in functional and performance, depending on regulatory requirements, architectural compatibility, cultural sustainability;
- Design of the elements required for the integration of the gaps, considering material, architectural and urban gaps, and study of historical interfaces for the design of ancient/new integration;
- Monitoring, enhancement and management.
The course will also provide basic knowledge of CATALOGUE AND DOCUMENTATION (ICT, information systems and databases for the restoration (2 hours) and includes THEMATIC SEMINARS and VISITS TO SEVERAL PILOT SITES.
The student will prepare a detailed restoration design of an artefact, accompanied by drawings and documentation. The workshop will be developed accordingly with the other courses of the semester and could be related to the master degree thesis, if compatible with the course’s issues.

Teaching Methods

1 – Mod. Design
The design module will be articulated through lectures, seminars and laboratory activities.
Teachers (designated or invited) will offer ex-cathedra communications in the first hour of lessons and then they will guide students in the development of a design case study. In alternation to communications lectures on texts and case studies design will be organized with the direct participation of students.
Projects that will achieve the most mature results might be developed as a final graduation thesis being guided by the teachers of the laboratory.


2 – Mod. Restoration
The restoration module will be carried out with a priority operational cut, focusing on the experiences and on the illustrations of case studies, encouraging participation in conferences and 'lectures' of visiting professors and of national and international experts, in workshops, discussion seminars, study trips, but also integrating with the Erasmus exchanges, the training internships and the preparation of the degree thesis.
In relation to the processing and communication tools, the use of ICTs will be encouraged, as well as planned moments of sharing and presentation - also public and involving other professionals and institutions - of the work produced and the results achieved.

Verification of learning

Students with a presence equal to or greater than 75% will be admitted to the exam.
The evaluation of the student's work will be defined on the basis of the following elements:
- Attendance and active involvement in educational activities;
- Assessment of the knowledge on the topics addressed and discussed during the course;
The design project will be assessed in relation to the themes characterizing both the two modules.

It will be assessed:
- the ability to read and interpret the specific qualities of pre-existing environment (buildings as well as the characters of the landscape which are part of);
-the intelligence and appropriateness of the reconfiguration of the designated use;
- the strength of synthesis and expressiveness of the design project; the autonomy of the student in developing the design work.

2 - Mod. Restoration:
In addition to what just written about for the design module, the student will be assessed on the ability to integrate the analysis data with the design choices, the degree of material and functional compatibility achieved by the design solutions, the level of development achieved in the definition of the interventions of conservation, integration, enhancement and management.
