The workshop aims to develop a project for a landscape context (urban, periurban, rural, etc.). The design approach is aimed to stimulating and acquiring various skills (compositional, graphic, logical, communicative, social, relational, operational-manual) and will be fueled by the multidisciplinary comparison with teachers and researchers through seminars and criticism.
The seminar activities and lessons will take place during the semester and are designed to trigger a reflection and an exchange on the themes of the landscape project and on the role of architecture in the construction of an urban culture of contemporaneity.
The student must acquire the ability to develop a landscape program (public space project, definition of environmental processes, architectural form, urban dimension, etc.) and particular value will be given to the acquisition of the ability to represent and effectively communicate design choices to the different scales.
Students are invited to attend this Laboratory in the right order stated by the Manifesto, that is only after they have attended the other Design Courses and passed the corresponding examinations.
The choice of the design theme is based on the possibility of experimenting with the idea of landscape as a collective architecture. The place and the topics of the project will be communicated in the presentation of the course. In particular, the course will deepen the comparison with the problem of landscape transformations induced by the current environmental conditions and the need to foreshadow a new cultural and development horizon for the decommissioned territories or put in crisis by urbanization and loss of identity. It is a question that requires a project capable of bringing together architecture, engineering, infrastructures, techniques, the local context and socio-economic models.
In this sense, the redevelopment, regeneration and environmental rehabilitation represent a field of the project that, with the techniques of environmental recovery and landscape architecture, explores the symbolic images and the expressive and formal potential of these places.
The course consists of two modules, landscape and project, which cannot be considered as separate moments of the activity. The continuity and integration between the two parts of the course is a fundamental prerequisite for a complex reflection on the modification of our contemporary landscape. The landscape module will be oriented towards a definition of the fundamental concepts and recent design practices, in the design of the project on the scale of wide relationships, in the construction of cognitive and analytical frameworks. The project module will deepen the details and the formal aspects with the aim of reaching a project outcome.
The course is divided into lessons, seminars and exercises, divided into two semesters, for a total of 100 hours. The lessons are based on the contents of the landscape and architectural discipline and on the assumptions of the project starting from a re-reading of the historical and contemporary experience.
The seminars, the communications and the conferences are intended to deepen monographic and thematic topics.
The first exercise is used to introduce the student to the topics of the course and consists in the production of research and study materials (forms, reports, surveys, etc.). The second exercise consists in the development of the project (additional materials and clarifications will be provided on this exercise). The project will end with an intensive workshop and the final criticism with the exhibition of the works.
Verification of learning
Attendance to lectures and laboratory is obligatory. The final exam consists of a discussion about the work, in the examination of the topics covered in the course, and in the study of the texts indicated in bibliography.
