Objectives

The course aims to develop a specific expertise regarding the methods of analysis and intervention on the "traditional", that is, the "pre-industrial", "hand-made" architectural and urban heritage, prevalently with "local" materials and techniques. A specific character of this Course is to deal with the themes of architecture in close relationship with the city. Students will learn that architectural and urban culture are inextricably linked and the same expression "historical center" represents this relationship, which is the design assumption of Recovery.
In particular, students must develop a good knowledge of the "culture of recovery", to know how to relate to the widespread heritage of homes and their urban fabrics; they will have to learn to know and deal with the technological, morphological and constructive characteristics and with the materials of pre-industrial architecture, as an apparatus of knowledge and experience aimed at intervention. The aim of the course is to put students in a condition to know "how it is achieved" in detail a specific historical architecture, to know "how to choose" the most appropriate intervention techniques.
During the lessons a structured framework of traditional construction techniques will be proposed, with examples relating to the national and international context, but with specific details on the regional context ("urban" and "rural" buildings).
The exercise will focus on the historical center of Cagliari, following the recent adoption of the new Recovery Plan.

Contents

The Course will have as an exercise field the historic center of Cagliari, and some of its buildings, and will be divided into lectures, seminars and inspections, and in an exercise on the main "building features" of the context of "traditional historical" building of Cagliari. The course will be divided into thematic areas:
1. The recovery of historical-traditional heritage between architecture and urban planning. The historic center as "collective architecture".
1.1. The debate on the recovery of historical centers
1.2. From the Building Type to the Construction Cultures
1.3. The question of Values in the "minor" and traditional historical-traditional architectural heritage: cultural settings, methodologies and case studies
2. the apparatus of knowledge and interpretation of "traditional historical" architecture. the structural conception, the use of materials and techniques of historical architectural artefacts aimed at identifying their relationships with design and construction cultures, with local and general contexts, with the historical processes that have generated and modified them
2.1. the history of techniques and technologies:
2.2. The new "Recovery Manuals": the analysis of the constructive characteristics of the existing building heritage; anatomy of the building factory, from basic materials to building components; notes on the historical technologies of the installation and the construction site
2.3. The historical - traditional "Construction Cultures" of Sardinia: Stone Architectures, Land Architectures. Building types and constructive characters
3. Guidelines for the recovery of historical-traditional architectures and artifacts: from degradation to Recovery Guidelines.
3.1. Represents of technical solutions for maintenance and redevelopment; definition of intervention strategies, in relation to the characteristics of the existing heritage
3.2. the problems of recovery and reuse in relation to the historical-typological characteristics of buildings in the processes of redevelopment of existing heritage: methods for identifying new uses, analysis of compatibility and impact on the context
3.4. the conservation and recovery of heritage and techniques, in relation to the process of physical, technological, functional and regulatory obsolescence that buildings have undergone over time and the changing use behavior
3.5. the specificities related to the meaning and characteristics of pre-modern building, to its mainly natural and local materials (stone, raw earth, baked bricks, wood ...), to the cultural values it incorporates, to the problems related to the dialectic between the recovery of techniques originals and technological and material updating
4. The New and the Ancient
The lessons will be accompanied and supplemented by seminars with case studies of a professional type (with exposures by designers and qualified technicians).
The students will perform with the teachers a simulation of the "Recovery Center of the Historic Center of Cagliari", promoted by the Municipality together with the DICAAR Department of the University to manage the interventions in application of the new Plan. Then they will have the opportunity to verify knowledge in real time by comparing them with situations and processes "in the real field", and with their protagonists.

Teaching Methods

The course will be developed through a professionalising methodology, a learning by doing applied to the historical center of Cagliari as a "Knowledge and project laboratory". Theoretical lessons and seminars on case studies with experts (60%) will alternate field inspections, with surveys and demonstrations also on site and exercise activities on the Recovery Laboratory (40%). Approximately then, about 25 hours out of a total of 40 will be dedicated to lessons and seminars, and 15 to exercises and inspections.

Verification of learning

The final exam will be an oral test. The final mark will be based also (up to 30%) on the exercises or other papers elaborated by students individually or in a small group.
