Objectives

Aim of the course is to provide students:
- the ability to recognize and use local natural building materials (earth, stone, hemp, loofah, straw, reed, ...)
- the ability to use earth as a building material, be able to mix soils to produce building elements for masonry, mortars, plasters and the identification of the most frequent related construction problems.
- the skills of making a small earth module (from design to construction)

1. THE QUALITY OF BUILDINGS
Lessons from the past for a sustainable architecture (VERSUS)
Integration of architecture to the local context
Exploitation of natural resources
Thermal insulation and protection against natural disasters
Conservation and reuse

2. STRATEGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
Positioning, shape, size of buildings
Materials and technologies, what sustainability?
Energies and alternative and passive systems for climate control

3. CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES
Raw materials: Earth, Wood, Stone
Binders: Lime, Clay, Gypsum ...

4. EARTH AS A BUILDING MAERIAL
Introduction: What is it? Where is it? How does it look like?
Soil for Construction. How to recognize it?

Characters of historical building
Conservation and reuse techniques of historical buildings

Teaching Methods

Theoretical classes (16 hours), practical activity (24 hours)

Verification of learning

The verification of the acquired knowledge will be done through an oral exam. Students are required to file a document about an earthen building containing: building plans, elevations and sections, description of the object, description of the building state of conservation.
For the attribution of the final grade the assiduity of attendance of the lessons will be taken into account.
