Knowledge and understanding:
Systemic approach to the study having as track the topics of lectures.

Knowledge and applied understanding:
Transfer the theoretical knowledge to the final design of parts of the building broadening and deepening the arguments.

Making judgments:
Critical awareness of the complexity and problems inherent in building design.

Communication skills:
Spur to the direct participation both during the exercises and the lectures to form the habit of verbal communication as well as written.

Ability to learn:
Working out a research and learning method to allow, during the profession, to better perform the tasks assigned.


All exams of the first year Course (or similar).


General topic of the year: planning a shading system designed to one pedestrian area of Cagliari.
The topic to develop comprises both the plan of the total area and the design of a shelter.

The generic title of the topic is:
shading system at Cagliari's pedestrian areas disposal. The first step relative to the design of the area will finish around half of October, then the specific tensile design will begin.
The shelter must be able to carry out at the same time the following function:
Protection (from sun, rain, wind etc.);
The shelter will be composed by cables, load-bearing elements (metal or wooden struts and ropes) and one or more membranes. The elements of bearing system can be distincted as shape, material and colours, or made up of the repetition of a module.
Functional solution must take in mind of the size, and the particular environmental conditions, orientation etc.

Teaching Methods

The educational Module is constituted by Lectures/Communications and Workshops for total 40 hs. In particular:

Are generally holded by the teacher. Some contributes of experts, representatives of public corporations are expected. They will develop deepening of specific topics, like as:
- Examples of shading system or similar (Madrid, Seville, Lisbon, Marrakech, Pécs, Tempio P.);
- Some icons of Contemporary Architecture;
- Tensile structures, their characteristics and typological and constructive variables;
- Examples from the educational activities of previous years.

Are a topic step during the development of the educational course: they are carried out in the lecture hall with groups formed by 3 or 4 students. The groups will be preferably proposed by the students. Students are invited, if possible, to carry out their work in the main in the lecture hall. They must be, for this, equipped with adequate tools and materials. For this reason it's necessary that each component of the group stay connected with all colleagues so that: drawings, models and all relative materials are ever available for workshops, even if one or more components are absent, to assure a regular and constant progress of the work and the review of the teacher and/or tutors.

Verification of learning

Models have a great importance for the elaboration of the project: the material and the scale at which the models will be realized is the student's choice, but they still constitute factor in assessing (such as correctness of the representation). It is required the realization of at least two models: the first relating to the first steps of the project (scale 1:100 or lesser); the second on detail of the tensile structure (at least scale 1:50 or greater). Other scale of representation can be accepted in agreement with the Teacher.
The study designs should only be realized freehand, while choosing on the final rendering mode is left to the student's choice.

2 Models;
A book of the final drawings (only and strictly on A3 format),
1 Poster on A1 format;
CD/DVD with all images of the project: graphic printouts (pdf), photos of the relief, model and its steps (ipg).
The Poster concerns the insertion in the context and the preliminary, executive and detail design of the architectural work.
The drawings should clearly represent the design and construction features of the project.
Best works can be inserting in some publications of the Faculty.

The frequency in the activities is compulsory.
Please note that at the start of the activities, the registration card to the Module will be taken and the each student's attendance sheet will be signed, then every student will carry them both already printed. The student's attendance sheet must be shown to each activity and it will be signed each time from Teacher or Tutor.
The works will be evaluated and voted at the end of activities.
The Course is organized jointly by the teacher and tutors/reviewers for a total commitment of approximately 40 hours.
Attendance at activities is compulsory, the presence are then recorded and a maximum number of hours of absence, equal to 20% of the total (8 hours) will be allowed.
