Objectives

1 - Mod. Survey: The overall aim of the course is to develop the student skills related to the analysis and understanding of the architectural survey. In particular it will be developed:
- Knowledge and understanding: main aim of the survey module is to provide students with useful knowledge to read and interpret architectural and urban contexts. The knowledge of the building and its urban context are prerequisites for the survey operations, on the basis of knowledge of the historical, architectural and typological constructive culture reference, and of the different approaches of architectural survey in relation to the themes of the restoration. Knowledge will be conjugated with the use of the drawing tools and the fundamental survey and representation techniques, together with understanding of different issues on the relationship between representation, architectural surveys and restoration.
- Applying knowledge and understanding: ability to define and evaluate the most appropriate methods and tools according to the purposes of the survey and the peculiarities of the specific working contexts, integrating the use of different survey methods. Define the project's survey through the different stages of knowledge, measurement and graphic representation.
- Making judgements: ability to a critical and synergistic use of different methods and techniques for the measurement data and graphical analysis of architecture.
- Communication skills: ability to get and integrate the information from several sources such that it is possible to achieve a deeper and conscious communication of the architectural features. Ability to articulate technical and scientific concepts of architecture drawing and surveying in archaeological, architectural and urban contexts.
- Learning skills: ability to integrate knowledge from various sources in order to achieve a broad understanding of the issues related to the architectural survey.

2 - Mod. Restoration: The main goal of the Restoration module is to enable the student to tackle an architectural restoration project, from the analytical phase to the plan. This on the basis of adequate knowledge about traditional building techniques, architecture history, innovative detection methods and diagnostic procedures, chronological and stratigraphic methods, analysis of diseases and causes of deterioration, methods of intervention and restoration techniques. With specific reference to the planning phase, in addition to solving technical issues, we will focus on cultural issues, i.e. the relationship between old and new, as well as the modern principles of compatibility, reversibility, distinguishability and minimal intervention. At the end of the course the student will be able to coordinate and carry out a restoration project at the architectural level - not apart from the urban and territorial context - based on modern modes of operation in terms of technical planning, and careful recognition of the peculiarities of the construction and the context in which one operates, to ensure the continuity of history.
In detail, the first part of the module will concern methodology of building analysis, trying to develope a critical approach based on cultural awareness, while the second part will consider planning techniques, legal aspects, and methods for documentation.

Prerequisites

1 - Mod. Survey: Knowledge of graphic representation methods (orthographic projections, isometric projections, oblique projections, perspective), map projections, architectural plan, prospecta and vertical sections representations; knowledge of the rules that govern the architectural design, the architectural history and the traditional architectural building techniques.
2 - Mod. Restoration: Knowledge of architectural history and theory of restoration.

Teaching Methods

1 - Mod. Survey: Lectures and laboratory teaching, performing with individual drawings and group graphic representations. Graphic exercises in the classroom and on the studied site. Lectures: 26.5 hours; laboratory exercises: 36 hours.
2 - Mod. Restoration: The typology of the Restoration module lessons varies. In summary, they consist of a series of lectures held by the teachers that hold the chair and by some guest teachers. To carry out the theme of the year, concerning the analysis of an architectural work (part one) and the definition of the restoration project (part two), the lessons will be alternated with site visits and workshop activities in the classroom. It is also expected to visit restoration sites.

Verification of learning

1 - Mod. Survey: At the end of the Survey Module, there will be a mid-term test: all the graphics documentation made in the classroom is one of the requirements for access to the mid term test . The intermediate test provides a partial interview in which the student will be called to discuss the drawings done with theoretical insights. The oral test is passed if the student responds correctly to two questions on various topics of the course program. An excessively insufficient response may compromise the whole oral examination. The final grade is determined by the evaluation of the graphic boards and final oral exam. The oral exam consists of a discussion on topics covered by the lectures. The student must demonstrate knowledge and mastery of the subjects taught during the course. At the end of the second semester, at the conclusion of the Restoration Module, will host the final examination.
2 - Mod. Restoration: With reference to this module, the student will demonstrate the knowledge of the theoretical issues discussed during the course, setting out the restoration project done.
Only students that have a number of occurrences equal to or greater than 75% will be admitted to the exam.
Outcomes contribute to the final vote on the submission of the restoration project and the oral interview. The oral exam consists of three questions pertaining to three different topics of the course program, through which the student must demonstrate that they have acquired a critical knowledge of personal discipline.
WORKSHOP
The theme of the laboratory will involve all the different parts of the integrated course and will consist in the survey, analysis and restoration project of the facade of a building located in the historic quarter of Castello in Cagliari.
In order to simplify the operations of detection, buildings will be selected among those part of urban plazas and squares.
For each building analyzed, the student will have to:

1. Mod. Survey:
A. Elaborate a graphical analysis at the urban scale of the identified block, through the drawing and the study of iconographic and cartographic sources;
B. identify the floor and the roof plans of the block, with particular reference to the roof plans of the block and the definition of the building units;
C. the studied context;
D. Elaborate some graphical representations of architectural elements (constructive and typological characters schedules);
E. Metric survey of the façade by means of photogrammetry techniques, with graphical depiction of the surface characteristics, such as materials and discontinuities.

2. Mod. Restoration:
A. Analyze the historical and urban classification, the typological and morphological aspects, the state of preservation;
B. Reconstruct the genesis and the stratigraphic evolution of the urban fabric, identify the information needs investigable through the instrumental diagnosis, identify the criteria and procedures for restoration, experimenting, if necessary, different approaches.
Each student will study a single building, but each one will have to compare his own restoration choices with the solutions adopted by the colleagues for the nearby buildings in order to acquire a good understanding of the impact of the single architectural project on urban scenes.

More Information

To carry the theme of the year, the architectural building chosen will be surveied and drawed during the Survey module, while the Restoration will aim to the analysis and the restoration project. In detail, in the first phase the students will provide to the analysis and the mapping of materials and degradation phenomena, as well as to the chronological definition of the structures, while in the second phase tey will continue with the definition of design solutions that aim to the maintenance, the conservation and restoration of the architectural work, and with the documentation of the project through the ICT systems.
The laboratory activity will be carried out with the division into working groups consisting of no more than 3 students with similar career commitments.
