The Laboratory is based on the assumption that a predominantly practical learning process is essential for the Master's Degree in Architecture, based on a summary of the real-world design processes; but also an enrichment from a theoretical point of view through classroom lectures, group lessons and even single ones. The goal is to bring the student to a trial of maximum integration between the architectural project and the main techniques connected to it, in particular the building, structural and plant engineering ones. In fact, the most advanced contemporary design requires that the architect is also a central subject in the coordination of the different aspects that characterize a complex and integrated approach to the definition of the building.
1. Mod. Technical Architecture
The Technical Architecture Module is aimed at providing students with a specific competence in the field of analysis and design of the existing architectural and urban heritage. In particular, students must be able to recognize the typological, morphological and constructive characteristics of contemporary, modern and pre-modern architecture. Through the illustration of theoretical apparatus and a rich series of examples they will have to learn the approach to the history of building techniques. They will also need to know how to interpret the issue of energy efficiency, with a view to overall building sustainability.
2. Mod. Construction Technique
The course aims to provide students with the tools to set the structure design problem in terms of safety and integration into the architectural organism, and to acquire those concepts necessary to understand and use the structural design procedures with confidence. In particular, the student will be prepared to draw up a structural project in all its phases: conception of the structural organism in coherence with the construction, with its architectural form and with its functional performance; choice of the material or materials constituting the structure based on the specificity of their mechanical behavior; definition of the shape and size of structural elements with their connections; evaluation of the actions applied to the construction; identification of a resistant scheme in relation to the materials and mechanical performance required; identification of a mechanical (structural) model that takes into account the performance of materials, construction processes and the evolution that the structure undergoes over time.
Awareness of structural problems in terms of civil and criminal liability and ability to understand and decide within multidisciplinary professional forums.
3. Mod. Thermophysics of the building
The course aims to provide students with the transversal knowledge necessary for a coordinated, integrated and compatible design process in a global vision of building-plant. The aim of the course is the greatest possible compatibility in the architectural integration of the building systems for a global environmental well-being. The lessons, compatibly with the real possibilities, will take place not only in the classroom in the sites available.
4. Mod. BIM
The module aims to transfer to the students the fundamentals and tools of the Building Information Modeling paradigm in order to make them protagonists of multidisciplinary building interventions in which the different specialist competences can be put to system to then converge towards global quality solutions and high efficiency.
Accessibility issues will be discussed during the course, where appropriate.

1. Technical Architecture module
Good basic knowledge of building industry elements and architectural technologies.
Good knowledge of the fundamental works of pre-modern, modern and contemporary architecture.
2. Construction Technique Module
Good knowledge of Construction Statics and Science; knowledge of building materials (reinforced concrete, steel, wood and masonry), in relation to the elastomechanical characteristics, the construction technologies and the sizing and verification of the structural elements; knowledge of the methods of installation and assembly of the most common construction elements.
3. Building thermophysics module
It is important to be aware of topics covered in technical physics and technical architecture courses. A good familiarity with the history of architecture and architectural composition is advisable. The basics of physics and general mathematics are absolutely essential.
4. BIM module
A good basic knowledge of the elements that make up the building factory and architectural technologies is fundamental.
It is advisable to be familiar with traditional 2D CAD and 3D CAD systems.

1. Technical Architecture Module
The Module aims to address the issue of analysis and design for pre-modern, modern and contemporary architectural and urban heritage. The main contents used will be those of the typological and constructive features of architecture, offering students a broad overview of international studies on the subject. The Module also wants to offer a point of view on building and architectural technology dedicated to the "material" and constructive aspects, always interpreted in a perspective that favors the "material history" or even the "history of techniques". This materiality is always underlying every formal aspect, both that of the great masters who have been able to sublimate the technique, and that of the good professional-performer who has produced over time most of the architectural artifacts and urban landscapes. The Module will take on a "sustainable" approach to the theme of energy building design and efficiency, which in the contemporary context is now an inescapable topic.
2. Construction Technique Module
The general and essential concepts related to the theory and design of steel, reinforced concrete and masonry constructions are discussed, analyzing the most significant aspects in the light of recent Italian and European regulations. The purpose of the Construction Technique is the project, and it is with this reference that this discipline intends to place its contents within the course of studies in Architecture.
The basic notions for the structural design of the building organization are given in terms of static scheme, construction type, structural materials.
3. Building thermophysics module
The laboratory will be divided into three phases of frontal teaching corresponding to the same number of phases of design work applied to the practical cases of the integrated course through the group design experience.
Introduction: Building technical installations and their reading. First phase: thermo-hygrometric comfort; the facilities dedicated to its management and thermal insulation. Concept of comfort and its perception, relationship between environmental comfort, external conditions and characteristics of the building envelope, energy efficiency, from the energy-saving system to the passive house, reference standards. Second phase: the water systems: adduction and discharge. The plant equipment of the buildings, from residential to industrial, Type and characteristics of the systems, Insertion in the architectural context, Construction techniques and choice of materials, Soundproofing, Maintainability. Integration of renewable energy sources. Third phase: the electrical and electronic systems. The plant equipment of buildings, from residential to industrial, Typology and characteristics of plants, Operation of technical systems at the service of architecture, Insertion in the architectural context, constraints and regulations, plant construction techniques and choice of materials, integration of renewable energy sources.
4. BIM module
The module will consist of a first phase in which the BIM methodology and the related effects on the construction sector will be presented. From the discussion of the basic concepts and the reference legislation, the advantages that the implementation of the methodology will allow to obtain in the different phases of the building process will be analyzed. The second phase of the module will focus on the presentation of the main features of the Revit Autodesk parametric modeling software which will be used to develop the information model of the selected case study. The parametric model of the building will have the task of integrating all the relevant information relating to the sphere of competence of the other three modules.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, Seminars and Project Workshop

Verification of learning

The oral exam begins with the discussion of the project: the student, using the synthesis tables delivered (tables in A1 format), technical reports and the BIM file, will have to describe their work, highlighting the reasons for the choices techniques performed. During the exam the candidate must also demonstrate knowledge of the topics covered during the course.
