Provide a knowledge as well as theoretical and practical comprehension skills of the methods and techniques adopted for planning a transportation system, with a strong focus on sustainability and integration with economic, land use and social aspects. Upon completion of the course the student will be able to clearly convey the in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge required for addressing issues regarding sustainable transport systems’ planning and develop independently study and research activities in transportation planning.


Bachelor degree in Architecture


Concepts, definitions and description of transportation systems, mobility and sustainable development. Externalities and transport costs. Significance of transportation planning structured into its different phases Quantitative and qualitative description and definition of mobility demand (landuse/transport interaction) and transport supply - particularly sustainable transport .
The functions, design and functioning of transport infrastructure and services relative to the demand to be satisfied for macro- and micro-mobility needs (pedestrians and cyclists). Intervention strategies.
Design and functional description, role of interventions, measures and actions on the supply and demand side to achieve sustainable urban mobility

Teaching Methods

30 classroom lectures 25 practicals and/or assignments carried out in the classroom and as homework on one or more practical cases, 5 seminars.

Verification of learning

Traditional methods, assessment of practicals/assignments to be delivered at the end of the course, oral examination with assessment of students’ learning and performance and acquisition of minimum requirements.

More Information

The student should be capable of tackling the problem of the functional planning/design of sustainable mobility interventions, measures and actions especially in an urban context. Attention should be paid to analysing mobility demand in quantitative terms and to the specific needs of the different users. The student should also be able to critically analyse the results and solutions to be adopted and to critically read any updates in this sector, in view of their practical application in professional employment. In particular, during the course a number of accessibility/mobility issues will be addressed regarding the urban context with which the student is familiar, with the support of the teacher and the tutors .
