The “Integrated laboratory of design and construction of architecture 1” is the core of the teaching activity of the first year of studies in Architectural Sciences. The laboratory is intended as a place for research, study, discussion. It integrates two modules, "Architectural and Urban Design" and "Technical Architecture", with the aim of define an educational path in which the fundamentals of architecture represent the basis of the poetic of the project. The course also intends to teach how to look with curiosity at the experience of others, to understand the similarities and differences that each experience tells, but above all to understand the need to relate to references in the design activity. In this sense, the analogy calls the comparison and the search for common elements. During the laboratory, students are led to think about the different scales of the composition and to relate each element of the project to the operational techniques and specific modes of representation.
The laboratory joins to "INCIPITLab - International coordination of the first-year architectural design laboratories" (scientific director: prof. Andrea Sciascia, UNIPA).

The main theme of the workshop is the design of the house, sizing, shaping, layout, characterization of functional spaces and the relationships that architecture has with the place. The architectural project is therefore intended in its entirety, as an expression of a whole. Starting from this central theme, the course addresses the study of the "architectural type" - the typological choice, the ways of aggregation, the relationship with the pre-existing architectural structures and, more generally, with the places of living - through some critical readings and with the tools of architectural composition, combining form with construction. Some projects will be an opportunity to deepen the figure of some authors, including (selection): Ville Savoye (Le Corbusier), Kaufmann House + Millard House (Frank Lloyd Wright), Tugendhat House + house with three patios (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe), Mairea House (Alvar Aalto), Casa studio per un artista (Luigi Figini and Gino Pollini), Casa Bianca (Giuseppe Terragni), Casa Malaparte + Tuscolano (Adalberto Libera), Casa Bunker (Cini Boeri), Barrio della Malagueira ( Alvaro Siza), House in Canoas (Oscar Niemeyer), Courtyard Houses in Matosinhos (Eduardo Souto de Moura), Vanna Venturi House (Robert Venturi), U House (Toyo Ito), maison à Bordeaux (Rem Koolhaas),…,. They will also be investigated through audiovisuals tools.
Some particular and interesting topics will be explored by external teachers called to hold an 'open lesson'.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity is divided into lectures and exercises. The first have the aim of anticipating the topics necessary to carry out the exercises; the second allow the student to experiment with the didactic contents and to develop a first independence to the project.
The first exercise, which will take place in the first semester, concerns the critical reading of an authorial house, single or multi-family, chosen from among the works of modern and contemporary architecture proposed by the teacher. The study will cover the observation, description, breakdown and redesign (plans, elevations, sections and axonometries or significant perspectives) made freehand on the assigned format and scale of representation.
The second exercise, which will be developed in the second semester, consists of the architectural design of a house, carried out with attention to places and architectural and environmental pre-existing structures. In fact, the project will be preceded by a study of the context and a reflection on the relationship between architecture and typology.
At the end of the second semester, if the epidemiological conditions will allow it, an intensive workshop will be held to define and conclude the design activities (drawings, reports and models).
To meet the needs imposed by epidemiological conditions, is provided the possibility of live streaming or recording lessons available online. Furthermore, the exercises can be carried out remotely, by the use of IT systems.

Verification of learning

The final exam consists of a discussion on the exercises and project carried out during the year, in the verification and critical knowledge of the topics dialed in the course and in the study of the texts listed in the bibliography.
Both during the course and during the final exam will be verified: a) knowledge and learning of the basics delivered in seminar or frontal form; b) learning of the theoretical background notions expressed in the reference bibliography (topics of your choice); c) the development of a critical sense and the ability to observe, describe and represent space; d) the degree of awareness of one's own design process; e) the autonomy of control of the design process; f) the overall ability to achieve high architectural quality; g) the ability to represent, describe and discuss one's own path and project outcome.
There are two formal moments of verification: the final critique and the interview. The final critique consists of a collective exhibition of the works that are submitted to the evaluation of a commission. The judgment in this phase constitutes the (indicative) basis for the final grade and the verification of points c-d-e.
On the basis of the provided bibliography, the theoretical lessons and seminar contributions, as well as on the notions issued during the frontal and collegial reviews (if the epidemiological conditions allow it), will take an individual interview to verify the learning of the a-b-d-e points. He will also have to prepare the deepening of a topic or a text of the bibliography that he consider useful to support his own design reasoning, possibly supported by the annotations collected during the course in the "zibaldone" (reasoned selection of intermediate elaborations, references and comments to the texts read during the course).
The final grade includes: the project, attendance and the exam interview in this extent: attendance 2/30; outcome and project path 26/30; interview about the project, the texts in the bibliography and on the "zibaldone" 2/30.
The exam interview takes place in public form only on the days indicated in the calendar of the exams.
Considering the unpredictability of the epidemiological conditions, in accordance with the conditions that will be dictated from time to time by the University, it is possible that the discussion of the project and the oral exam will be carried out online, through the use of the IT platforms made available from the University of Cagliari (eg. Teams).
