The Integrated Laboratory constitutes the heart of the didactic activity of the first year of studies in Architectural Sciences and combines the modules of Architectural Composition 1, in the first semester, and of Technical Architecture 1, in the second semester, disciplines that define the fundamentals of the project. of architecture and its construction. These two modules interact coherently and reciprocally, completing the knowledge of the entire creative path of architecture: from conception to execution. In order to fully develop this path - which includes the conceptual and creative aspects of form, architectural space and the typological, technical construction and technological expression - the laboratory articulates the two modules, alternating and integrating the different and interrelated contents with theoretical lessons. disciplinary, applying them to the themes developed in the different phases of the program with the aim of achieving the best completeness of the result.
It is required the preliminary reading of a history of modern architecture to be able to frame the theoretical arguments and design within the architectural debate of the last century. It is moreover required, a basic knowledge of the rules of geometry and technical and architectural design based on the well-known manuals about drawing and design.
The central theme of the workshop is the project of the integrated house: the sizing, the study of the shape, the layout, the characterization of the functional spaces and the relationships that architecture has with the place. This design theme consists in developing a building or neighborhood inserted in a real, urban, peripheral or rural context. The project is always preceded by a study of the site and a reflection on the relationships between the architecture, the typology and the context, the methods of aggregation of the type and the links between the new intervention and the pre-existing system. The Architectural Composition module develops the design aspects, studying the typological solutions, the formal aspects and the related system of coherence with the construction aspects. The Technical Architecture module focuses on the related construction aspects in line with the typological and distributive indications and introduces issues related to the sustainability and energy efficiency of buildings. In both cases, particular attention is paid to solutions for the removal of architectural barriers as an integrated form in the project.
The course consists of lectures, seminars and two exercises.
The lessons concern, from one side, the theory of the discipline of architecture and, from the other, the design practice, through the reinterpretation of historical and contemporary examples. They will be the basis for a deep understanding of some key concepts of the discipline, such as the architectural type.
The seminars, conferences or lectures are meant to deepen some monographic and thematic topics (construction, performance, sizing, etc.) or to present the work of an architect.
The design laboratory is divided into two main exercises and a final workshop.
The first exercise (Individual work) is the study of a project of a collective house chosen among the works of modern and contemporary architects. The student will produce a table in A2 format containing plans, elevations, sections and an axonometric or meaningful perspectives that represent the building, and a report that highlights the critical analysis of spatial and compositional elements (architectural type, space, module, etc. .) and the technical and construction features(house in stone, concrete, steel, etc.). The development of this activity will be concentrated in the first two weeks.
The second exercise (team work, max three people) consists in the design of a collective residential building and the public space in which it is inserted. The project will be preceded by a study of the site and a reflection on the relations between architecture, the type and the context, the study of the aggregation’s technique and the links between the new development and the system of existing buildings. Materials will be provided and further details of this exercise will be provided during the semester. At the end of the semester there will be a design workshop (3 days) with the exhibition of the works
Verification of learning
The final exam consists of a discussion about the exercises and the work carried out during the year, in the examination of the topics covered in the course, and in the study of the texts indicated in bibliography.
The project contributes up to max 24/30. The 3 questions each 2/30. Overall from 18 to 21 correspond to a sufficient knowledge, from 22 to 26 a fair knowledge of the subjects and properties of language, from 27 to 30 an excellent knowledge of the subjects and properties of language. Honors are given to students who, in addition to having an excellent project, demonstrate that they also know in detail the detailed topics presented with absolute language properties.

The materials needed for the project will be provided during the exercises or collected and processed during the workshop. During the semester will be communicated some fundamental texts to address the covered topics in order to deepen the lectures and exercises.
