This "Integrated Laboratory on Design and Construction of Architecture 2" course is composed of two modules: Architectural Composition and Technical Architecture.
In the design module, students will be asked to design a medium dimension building up to its preliminary level, while in the construction module some parts of the project will be developed up to the working plan level.
The main goal of the course is to help students in developing an increased maturity regarding their operative tools, growing a personal understanding of disciplinary themes, both formal and theoretical. Therefore, some general topics will be studied during the laboratory, both in the project activity and through readings and seminars. These are themes that correspond to key issues of the historical experience of architecture and contemporary debate.
The design studio module is conceived as a laboratory-workshop: a shared space where students and professors investigate and experiment the architecture as a discipline and as a practical and also cultural experience. Students will be stimulated by developing a perception of architecture as an open culture, which we are responsible for, both as heirs and imaginative interpreters. We consider this beyond all “handbook” reductions – which are only practical or functional – and beyond any ideological rigidity.
The construction module focuses on providing students training and researching contribution, focused on the acquirement of cultural and operational tools needed to the future designer to can express specific professional skills. We will guide students in acquiring knowledge of methods and tools needed to understand the construction project through the identification of physical and logical elements, distinct and organized, which are finalized, training, historical evolution, and their widespread feasibility study and tracing architectural design in the relationship between materials, techniques, and processes of production at the factory, workshop, on-site available to the architect.
The course will train students to determine appropriate technical design solutions in relation to the environment, the spatial configuration of the building in relation to the systems, and the materials used. Knowing theoretical principles and methods through which we determine and organize up to the definition of executive construction techniques.
We assume that the attending students have already acquired basic notions regarding design and its representation. In addition, will be required notions about the elementary knowledge of the building system and statics.
It is preferable to have passed the exam of the Integrated Design and Construction Laboratory 1 course.
The design studio is centered on the reflection about some general themes that will guide the design work and will be debated in the classroom during the theoretical lessons and in the context of seminars. Some key moments in the project work will be identified and proposed for students' reflection both in their practical exercise and in the perspective of the contemporary theoretical debate.
Particular attention will be given, during the project phase, to the issues related with the accessibility for all of spaces and buildings.
The Design studio is divided into 2 types of activities:
- lessons: 20 hours;
- design activities (development of the project in classroom, elaboration of drawings and models, revisions): 80 hours.
The design activities will be subdivided in single tasks organized in different steps.
Theoretical lessons will be focused on design work, specifying the design theme and the site character.
Lessons will be given by the professor or will be organized in form of seminars which will involve students directly.
Theoretical notions and practical suggestions will be intended both to integrate the design activity and offer the necessary cultural perspective.
Verification of learning
The final evaluation will be calculated as a weighted average between the evaluation of the final design of the Composition module, and the one of the Construction module. The weighted calculation will take as weights the credits envisaged by the two modules.
DESIGN MODULE, EVALUATION CRITERIA
As regards the Design module, the final verification and the attribution of the grade will be based on pre-established criteria that it is considered useful to explain at the start of the course: this will help the student to orient and manage the laboratory activity in the most effective in order to draw up a complete and fully satisfactory project and obtain adequate recognition for the quality of the work performed.
The criteria will be the following:
1. quality and continuity of participation in teaching activities
2. clarity and expressiveness of the project concept
3. consistency and imagination in the development of the composition
4. sensitivity and effectiveness of the relationship between the project and the place where it is established
5. autonomy and critical capacity in the development of project work.
6. quality of presentation and graphic rendering
GRADES ASSESSMENT SYSTEM
The grade will be the arithmetic sum of the evaluation of the project (1) and the evaluation of the questionnaire (2) on the theoretical topics:
1) Verification of the project and assigning a grade
The final verification of the project will be unitary for the students who are members of the subgroup and co-authors of the project. According to the criteria described above, the range of votes will be:
18-22: projects that meet the 6 criteria sufficiently, and that do not excel in any aspect
23-26: projects satisfying the 6 criteria sufficiently and demonstrating a fair evaluation in some criteria
25-26: projects that meet the 6 criteria in a fair way, and that demonstrate a good evaluation in two / three criteria
27-28: projects that meet the 6 criteria in an excellent way, and which demonstrate an excellent evaluation in three / four criteria
29: Projects which meet the 6 criteria very well, and which demonstrate an excellent rating in at least five criteria
30: projects that excel in all criteria
2) QUESTIONNAIRE on THEORETICAL ARGUMENTS
The theoretical topics test, consisting of 10 multiple choice questions, will be assessed as follows:
+2 points on the evaluation of the project for 10 correct answers
+1 point on project evaluation for 9 correct answers
+0 points on project evaluation for 8-5 correct answers
-1 points on the evaluation of the project for 4-3 correct answers
-2 points on the evaluation of the project for 2-0 correct answers
Honors will be awarded to students who have reached the maximum grade (30) in the verification of the project and who have also excelled in all the evaluation criteria described above.
We propose a selection of texts, theoretical writings of orientation and operational tools, which define the physiognomy of the laboratory. This bibliography is intended as a "work in progress", further references could be added during the workshop.
