The Course of Urban Planning Foundamentals provides students with a critical understanding of issues that concern planners. The course is oriented in several modules. These includes the theoretical and technical knowledge that is required to identify problems, the values and attitudes of planning, the public who planning serves and the skills to formulate, evaluate and implement planning policies at the national, regional, urban, and local scales. The course provides an introduction to the core areas of Planning. The areas cover issues such as the nature of planning thinking, the elements of planning, and the developing world. Students will also develop the essential skills for accessing and processing information. Secondly the students build on the basis laid, looking in much more depth at the history of urban planning thought, the economic and cultural sub-fields of planning, the core practical disciplines of planning, and planning’s application to environmental issues. A stream on geographical research provides a review of research techniques and issues.

Basic knowledge of modern history

Recent years have witnessed a so-called ‘cultural turn’ within geography as the inter-relations between culture, space and place have been awarded an increased significance. Moving away from traditional concerns with narrow and descriptive understandings of culture, a ‘new’ cultural geography has emerged which has attempted to understand the multiple and contested cultural meanings attached to space, place and landscape. This module provides a critical review of these developments. It begins by tracing the historical development of cultural geography and then moves on to provide an overview of the key components of the contemporary subject. In particular, one module considers the cultural construction of space and place, geographies of identity and difference, cultural landscape and regional landscape Plan.
Another module examines the origins of spatial planning in Italy and explains how the current system has evolved. Particular attention is given to key themes in the emergence of national italian planning: its emergence as a local government activity; changing political ideologies, and the shifting spatial scales of planning. Building on this historical foundation, students will be introduced to the current structure of planning, its institutional, legal and political basis, with links being made to emerging debates about spatial planning at regional and EU scales.
The course provides also an accessible, yet critical, synthesis of urban regeneration in Italy incorporating key policies, approaches, issues and debates. These approaches are contextualized by discussion covering, for example, urban competitiveness policies and the focus on sustainable urban regeneration and provides a comprehensive and up to date synthesis that fill a significant gap in the current literature on regeneration and it is a tool for students as a seminal read for practioners and researchers.
