Objectives

The Course of Geodesign will offer the students theoretical, methodology, normative and practical bases to deal with sustainable spatial planning according a to a Geodesign approach. With reference to the European, national and regional spatial planning and environmental protection regulatory frameworks, the student will learn how to design and implement spatial planning process starting from knowledge building (i.e. territorial representation and analysis of dynamics, and evaluation) to action (i.e. design of alternative change patterns, impact assessment, and decision) relying on the state of the art geospatial information and communication technologies (i.e. GIS, Internet) and Planning Support Systems.

Prerequisites

In order to successfully complete the Course Geodesign, no previous disciplinary knowledge is required.
Basic knowledge of the English language for reading international literature and of OFFICE and CAD software advisable, but not necessary.

Contents

The Course includes the following main topics and the knowledge to understand their relationships to support sustainable integrated spatial planning and design:
1. Geodesign;
2. Demographic analysis and forecasting;
3. Spatial Analysis of Regional and Urban Systems;
4. Geographic Information Systems and Science;
5. Planning Theory;
6. Environmental and Land-use Planning;
7. Planning Systems and regulations (ref. EU/Italy);
8. Spatial decision support;
9. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA);
10. Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA);
11. Public participation in planning;
12. Sustainable development;

Teaching Methods

Teaching will be delivered through formal lectures (approx.. 60%) and hand on tutorials and planning and design studio work (40%). Each lecture will systematically cover the main concepts and topics with slide presentations support. References to relevant technical literature and documents will be provided for each topic during the course.
In addition, all the necessary teaching multimedia support documents and data will be made available to all registered students.
Detailed workload 62,5 hours (5 credits), of which:
- 35 hours lectures
- 27,5 hand-on exercises / design studio work

Verification of learning

The final exam is oral. The evaluation include knowledge of principles, methods, and tools, ability to critically discuss the course topics and issues, lexicon. The final exam includes the assessment of the results of the geodesign lab/studio work.
