The Laboratory includes the conception of the shape and the architectural space, its linguistic expression and, at the same time, the typological, the technical and technological ones- the laboratory is divided in two modules that integrate and alternate lectures and different inter-disciplinary content, applied to the themes developed in the different phases of the program with the objective to achieve the best result of completeness.
It is required the preliminary reading of a history of modern architecture to be able to frame the theoretical arguments and design within the architectural debate of the last century. It is moreover required, a basic knowledge of the rules of geometry and technical and architectural design based on the well-known manuals about drawing and design.
The central theme of the workshop has been the design of the house through the shaping of the architectural objects, its relation with the context and the characterization of its functional spaces. The design theme is always oriented towards the design of a building or a neighborhood located in a consolidated or peripheral urban area. The project is always preceded by a study of the site and a reflection on the relations between the architecture, the typology and the context, the aggregation and the type of links among the new intervention and with the existing system. The module of Architectural Design is dedicated specifically to the design process, insisting on the aspects of the typology and its linguistic expression as a rigorous operation intimately linked with the aspects of the construction.
The course consists of lectures, seminars and two exercises.
The lessons concern, from one side, the theory of the discipline of architecture and, from the other, the design practice, through the reinterpretation of historical and contemporary examples. They will be the basis for a deep understanding of some key concepts of the discipline, such as the architectural type.
The seminars, conferences or lectures are meant to deepen some monographic and thematic topics (construction, performance, sizing, etc.) or to present the work of an architect.
The design laboratory is divided into two main exercises and a final workshop.
The first exercise (Individual work) is the study of a project of a collective house chosen among the works of modern and contemporary architects. The student will produce a table in A2 format containing plans, elevations, sections and an axonometric or meaningful perspectives that represent the building, and a report that highlights the critical analysis of spatial and compositional elements (architectural type, space, module, etc. .) and the technical and construction features(house in stone, concrete, steel, etc.). The development of this activity will be concentrated in the first two weeks.
The second exercise (team work, max three people) consists in the design of a collective residential building and the public space in which it is inserted. The project will be preceded by a study of the site and a reflection on the relations between architecture, the type and the context, the study of the aggregation’s technique and the links between the new development and the system of existing buildings. Materials will be provided and further details of this exercise will be provided during the semester. At the end of the semester there will be a design workshop (3 days) with the exhibition of the works.
Verification of learning
The final exam consists of a discussion about the exercises and the work carried out during the year, in the examination of the topics covered in the course, and in the study of the texts indicated in bibliography.

The materials needed for the project will be provided during the exercises or collected and processed during the workshop. During the semester will be communicated some fundamental texts to address the covered topics in order to deepen the lectures and exercises.
