Laboratory is divided in two modules: Architectural Composition (the first semester) and Technical Architecture (the second semester). During the first module the students will design a medium dimension building up to his preliminary level, during the second module some parts of the design will be developed up to their working plan level.
Design laboratory 2 is conceived as a laboratory-workshop: a shared space where students and professors could investigate their design activity and their discipline, architecture, both as a practical and cultural experience. During the second year of their education, the students continue their course of knowledge acquisition and design practice initiated the year before. In planning their activities, we consider that they already acquired the basic notions regarding design and its representation. Our goal is to help them develop increased maturity regarding their operative tools, growing their understanding of disciplinary themes, both formal and theoretical. Above all we tried to stimulate the perception of architecture as an open culture, which we are responsible for, both as heirs and imaginative interpreters. We have to consider this beyond “handbook” reductions – which are only practical or functional – and beyond any ideological rigidity.
The module of building of the architecture focuses to provide to students a training and searching contribution, focused to acquirement of cultural and operational tools needed to the future designer to can express specific professional skills. We will guide students in acquiring knowledge of methods and tools needed to understand the construction project through the identification of physical and logical elements, distinct and organized, which are finalized, training, historical evolution, and their widespread feasibility study and tracing architectural design in the relationship between materials, techniques and processes of production at the factory, workshop, on site available to the architect.
The course will train students to determine appropriate technical design solutions in relation to the environment, the spatial configuration of the building in relation to the systems used and the materials used. Knowing theoretical principles and methods through which we determine and organize up to the definition of executive construction techniques.
Considering the Laboratory as a triennial course second step, we assume that students have already acquired during the first year the basilar notions of design and his graphic representation.
Design activity will be the core of the Laboratory: a single exercise organized in different steps with presentations. Analysis researches and theoretical lessons will be focused on design work, defining his themes and the character of the site. Lessons will be given by the professors, the tutors or will be organized in form of seminars which will involve students directly. Theoretical notions and practical suggestions will be intended both to integrate the design activity and offer the necessary cultural perspective.
Technical Architecture module lessons contents: The building system: the body architectural system with interconnected subsystems and logical relationship. The logic of functional relationship and the logic of constructive relationship. The construction equipment and its geometry. The building elements and systems. Functional building elements.
Subsystems: structure, horizontal closures, vertical closures, vertical communications, internal partitions, functional blocks and spatial cells. Technological systems.
Typological characteristics of the subsystems: definition. Building system of reference and geometric classification. The structure of the building and the correlations between the components. The construction process as a result of the choice of building elements and modes of production. The construction process as a result of technical and financial capability of the company.
The design of the building: the workability of materials. Static safety criteria and use of materials for elementary systems and organisms. Fulfillment of environmental well-being. The material and shape perception.
The modular coordination dimensional traditional manufacturing processes. Prefabrication. Industrialized building. Production of models. Production of components. The module measures. Multimoduli preferential and numbers. Manufacturing tolerances and assembly. The module object. Joints. Standardization and unification of building products.
Design work will be organized in different phases with public presentation. Every step will be announced and fixed at the beginning of the course. Presentations are conceived as a seminar activity which involves every student for stimulate a vivid debate between the different working teams.
Verification of learning
Final assessment comes from an arithmetic mean between the mark obtained at the end of the first module (Architectural Composition) and the second (Technical Architecture).
Work evaluation will be based on the following criteria: quality and continuity in the didactic activity participation, in the seminars and in preparing the work documentation; the quality and skill of the design work in reference to his conception, his technical interpretation and graphical representation. As an important element will be also considered the capacity to describe and discuss work choices and adopted solutions (both in oral and writing form).
The student will be assessed even for the level of knowlegments about theoretical principles developped during the lectures.
We propose some texts that define the Laboratory theoretical orientation and which will be discussed with the students during the seminars. This bibliography is intended as a work in progress and new texts will be added during the lessons. Suggestions by students are also welcome and encouraged.
