The course aims at acquiring the disciplinary, theoretical and methodological tools of urban geography and the learning of critical interpretation tools. It will address the study of the main theories about the city, mixing descriptions and methodologies of analysis that come from geography, art and other disciplines (sociology, urbanism, economics). The themes of the main theories of urban organization and the study of the main analytical theories of urban geography and the territorial, social, political, and cultural aspects of the city will be addressed.

In conformity with what has been established by the Dublin Descriptors (I-V), at the end of the course the student would have acquired the following knowledge and skills:

I. Knowledge and understanding: the student will acquire knowledge of the main interpretative models of the concepts of space, place and urban territory.

II. Capacity to apply knowledge and understanding: thanks to the notions acquired, the student will be able to analyse and understand the principles and tools of urban policies and spatial practices.

III. Making judgements: the student will have the ability to express an independent and critical judgement on urban space and on policies that govern them.

IV. Communication abilities: the student will be able to communicate the knowledge and skills acquired, as well as express one’s own opinions with regard to the main controversial issues related to contemporary urban thematics.

V. Learning skills: the student will be able The student will be able to apply knowledge and understanding acquired in the professional and research fields related to urban and territorial systems.


There are no formal prerequisites but the student attending the course must have appropriate language, logical, cultural, political skills.
Obligatory pre-requisites are indicated in the “Regolamento” of the Corso di Studio.


1. Geography of cities: formation, political form, urban form, functional characters.
2. Urban networks: city and territory, gravitation areas, city hierarchies, global networks, and local systems.
3. The urban phenomenon and contemporary cities: functions, dynamics, environment, inhabitants and social issues
4. City Definitions: Concepts and Territories in Urban Geography
5. The form of urban growth
a. The City of Developed Countries: Urban Areas and Trend in the European Union and America
b. Latin American, Asian, and Mediterranean cities.
c. Underdevelopment: exponential growth, urban policies, marginality management
6. Economy, society and urban change
7. Contemporary cultural specificity: the city and the cultural turn
8. Describe the cities: methodologies, methods, techniques.
9. Pictures and cities: urban, film, photographic and literary representations.
10. Politics and cities: forms of urban territorialization of power
11. Actors, cities and urban policies
12. Urban metamorphoses: projects, practices, reuses of the city

Teaching Methods

The course will consist of 20 lessons of 2 hours each. After a more strictly theoretical-conceptual (conducted with classroom lectures), followed by a seminar part with more applied studies on specific topics and presentation by the students attending. A workshop will be proposed concerning the representations of the contemporary urban phenomenon.

Verification of learning

The assessment includes a written test (test with open questions). The final grade will take into account the results of the test and for the attending students, of the laboratory carried out during the course.

For non-attending students, the assessment includes a written test (test with open questions) concerning the parts of the program for non-attending students.

The score of the exam is expressed in thirtieths.
The results will be published and recorded in the Esse3 system.

Method of determining the vote:
In the assessment of the exam, the determination of the final grade takes into account the following elements:

1. the ability of the student to use topics learned coherently with the resolution of the proposed question;
2. the ability to have grasped the links between the themes dealt with, in a synthetic vision;
3. knowledge of the course topics;
4. the use of an appropriate language.

To pass the exam and then report a grade not lower than 18/30, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired sufficient knowledge of the topics covered in the course (point 3) and be able to express them in a summary vision and with critical spirit (point 2), with an at least acceptable argument (point 1) and a language free from serious errors (point 4).
To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must instead demonstrate that he has acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course (point 3), with a high capacity for argumentation (point 1), an excellent ability synthesis (point 2) and a correct and appropriate language (point 4).


1. Attendants who have done the Laboratory (less than 40% of absences) will have to answer a textbook test: Memoli-Governa Geografie dell'urbano, 2011, Rome, Carocci.

2. Attendants who have not done the Laboratory (but with less than 40% of absences) will have to answer:
- two questions concerning the textbook Memoli-Governa Geografie dell'urbano, 2011, Rome, Carocci.
- a third question concerning the volume of Bernardo Secchi, The City of the Poor and the City of the Rich, 2013, Laterza.

3. Not attending (or more than 40% of absences) will have to answer:
- two questions concerning the textbook: Memoli-Governa Geografie dell'urbano, 2011, Rome, Carocci.
- a third question concerning the volume Italy of cities. Between malaise and transfiguration, (online on the teacher's website).

Support materials will be provided on site and at lesson.
For foreign students it is possible to agree a program in a foreign language.
