The student must possess the following knowledges and capabilities; these are necessary because of the complexity of the questions deal in the Composition Module of the Laboratory of Design and Construction 3, concerning the architectural form both for the questions connected to the dimension of the buildings to be designed and its localization within weak and high characterized contexts:
a) well assimilated and complete control of preliminary theoretical aspects both in the composition of surfaces and volumes and in the typological and distributive subjects; b) a deep knowledge about the principal and basing elements of the traditional and modern building methodologies and techniques; c) the capability to draw out and clearly illustrate architecture designs and plans with full command of the different drawing media, both with the informatics CAD and by hand and to represent the realisation of models in different scales; d) the skill to illustrate through oral and write exposition the design choices and to discuss them with the colleagues of the laboratory, with the tutors and professors; e) the students must to be able to sustain and to argument their ideas and works by the platform of the knowledge they acquired during the two previous years of the Degree Course.




The Integrated Laboratory of Design and Construction 3, of the third year of the Degree Course L-17_ Sciences of Architecture AA 2012-13, Matr. 2010-11, is divided in two modules: Composition of Architecture (8 University Formative Credits) to be teach in the first Semester and Technical Architecture (4 Credits) teach in the second Semester. Although this type of division, the teaching is integrated; in other words the didactic presumes that the two subjects interact with the maximum of coordination and coherence wih the aim to complete the creative itinerary of the creation of architecture from the first concepts to the final detailed design works. Actually the Integrated Laboratory ended with a unique examination with one mark inclusive of the judgement in both subjects, considering the total work of the students made during the two semesters. With the aim to fully develop with this itinerary – which includes the conceptual items of the architectural form and space, the connected expressive languages and, at the same time, those of typology, of building techniques and technologies – the Integrated Laboratory combines the two modules with the lessons, seminaries and conferences about theory items connecting the disciplinary questions and contents, applying them to the themes developed during the various phases of the programme, and with the goal to keep the best of the final outcome.
During the Integrated laboratory the student will approach to the architecture questions through the study of the design of an architecture complex to be build in an assigned site in a real context situated in a consolidated but marginal urban district. This thematic has been decided considering that the students could better find the limits and the indications for the creation of the architecture concepts founding themselves to work inside and versus a consolidated and strong characterized environment. The choice of the functional destinations and uses in those sites will be defined by the students together with the tutors by the reason of the outcomes coming from the reading, the analysis, and the preliminary studies at micro and macro scales. Principally the Composition of Architecture Module will develop the first ideas of concept and the first definition design. It also will deal with the composition items of the architectural form and of the types of languages of the architecture expression.
It is assumed that many different functions and destinations are to be considered: commercial, handicrafts, residential, receptive, expositive, artistic and cultural and play. The choice will come both from the context analysis, the inherent vocations of the sites and of their logistic proprieties, and from the innovative and eventually radical proposals of the working student groups. The totality of choices will be assumed together by of the students and their tutors and teachers starting from the established bases developed the first part of the Laboratory.

Teaching Methods

The procedure of the teaching of this Integrated Laboratory is planned with the "in itinere" analysis, debate and correction of the work in progress by the student’s groups, the tutors and the teachers during the entire length of the laboratory up to the final delivery of the elaborates. These – drawings and plastics – will be concluded at the end of the semester without any possibility of delay. An articulated judgement will be issued by the teachers on the solution proposals made by the students: this valuation will concern the quality and the cultural level of concept items, the definition of the formal composition, the graphic level of the drawings. The valuation will also indicate both what aspects are to be changed and/or better elaborated, and the technical and constructive aspects to be developed during the second part of the Laboratory in the Module to be held in the following semester (Technical Architecture Module). The exams will be at the end of the this second semester with the award of the points that will resume the total level of the student work and knowledge about the design and constructive contents ( composition, technique, technology, graphic). At the same time, will be given the University Credits established by the Manifesto of the Studies. A sequence of classes is planned to teach theory arguments and the necessary knowledge that will be applied during the development of the laboratory. The contents of these classes will expose a critical analysis of paradigmatic examples of Modern and Contemporary architecture, where are solved similar questions of those approached by the students, and where the solutions and methods are quite compatible with the line and the level of the didactic of the laboratory programme. The entire material of the classes will be informatically at hand.

Verification of learning

The progressive check-out and the final evaluation will be made through the critical analysis and the testing of the quality of the laboratory products and with the control of the correspondences with the previous “learning outcomes” that will be held during the final exams. The examination will also specifically and detailing verify the level of learning of the arguments explained during the classes and seminars.
Because of the coordination with the Technical Architecture Module, the exams will specifically check the quality of the connections between the design composition choices and the skill in translate them in the constructive elaborates of the architecture complex, defined both in the whole and in single different details. Will be also estimated the correspondence between the architecture concepts and the constructive details at different design scales.
The final exam will too verify the level of the relationships between the volumes and the other formal characters elaborated by the students with the landscape and the environment where the buildings is supposed to be located, particularly will be seen the correspondence with the pre-existing dimensional and material contexts characters and the general sustainability of the introduced proposals.
The final assessment is individual and is derived from the results of the tests impromptu developed during the two semesters, the outcome of the project activities developed during the entire duration of the course (first and second semester), the oral test will focus on theoretical issues addressed during the series of lectures of the two semesters.

the priority means of teaching are represented by bibliographic sources listed in item bibliography mostly available at the libraries of the Faculty and in particular the section of architecture in Via Corte d'Appello, and finally from the personal library of the teacher.
The lessons are made available to students who request it and must be considered as part of the materials necessary to the preparation.
