This course, "Integrated Laboratory on Design and Construction of Architecture 2", is composed of two modules: Architectural Composition (first semester) and Technical Architecture (second semester). During the first module, students will design a medium dimension building up to his preliminary level, while during the second module some parts of the design will be developed up to their working plan level.
Design laboratory 2 is conceived as a laboratory-workshop: a shared space where students and professors investigate and experiment with the design activity and architecture as a discipline, as an experience practical and also cultural. During the second year of their education, students continue their path of knowledge acquisition and design practice started the year before. In planning their activities, we assume that they already acquired basic notions regarding design and its representation. Our goal is to help them in developing an increased maturity regarding their operative tools, growing a personal understanding of disciplinary themes, both formal and theoretical. Students will be stimulated by developing a perception of architecture as an open culture, which we are responsible for, both as heirs and imaginative interpreters. We consider this beyond all “handbook” reductions – which are only practical or functional – and beyond any ideological rigidity.

The building of the architecture module focuses on providing students a training and researching contribution, focused to the acquirement of cultural and operational tools needed to the future designer to can express specific professional skills. We will guide students in acquiring knowledge of methods and tools needed to understand the construction project through the identification of physical and logical elements, distinct and organized, which are finalized, training, historical evolution, and their widespread feasibility study and tracing architectural design in the relationship between materials, techniques and processes of production at the factory, workshop, on site available to the architect.
The course will train students to determine appropriate technical design solutions in relation to the environment, the spatial configuration of the building in relation to the systems and the materials used. Knowing theoretical principles and methods through which we determine and organize up to the definition of executive construction techniques.


Considering this course as the second step of a triennial path, we assume that students have already acquired during the first year the basilar notions of design and graphic representation. And also, the basic notions about the elementary construction, statics, and history of modern architecture.
Attending and passing Integrated Laboratory of Design and Architecture 1 it is highly recommended.


Design activity will constitute the core of the course, subdivided in single exercises organized in different steps. Analysis practices and theoretical lessons will be focused on design work, specifying the design theme and the site character. Lessons will be given by the professors, and tutors or will be organized in form of seminars which will involve students directly. Theoretical notions and practical suggestions will be intended both to integrate the design activity and offer the necessary cultural perspective.

Teaching Methods

Design work will be organized in different phases corresponding to intermediate presentations scheduled at the beginning of the year. Presentations are conceived as seminar activities, in which every team will present the own developed work of design, and in which every student will be involved in stimulating a vivid debate between the different working teams, with a general aim of animating a debate - even between different points of view - always looking to the general research guidelines fixed by the theme and by the design program.

Verification of learning

The final assessment is a result of an arithmetic average between the first-semester grade (architectural design module) and the second-semester one (building module).

The architectural design module evaluation will be based on pre-established criteria clarified since the beginning to help students in guiding and managing their design in the most efficient way and, also, preparing a complete and fully satisfactory presentation.


A selection of references, theoretical orientation papers, and operative tools, is proposed in order to define the course physiognomy. This bibliography is intended as a work in progress, additional texts might be added during the development of the course. Suggestions by students are also welcome and encouraged.

Through a specific website, organized as a blog, students may access to all information about the organization of activities and download educational materials such lessons, images, and basic designs, as well as be constantly informed about latest teacher's communications.
Credentials will be communicated at the beginning of the lessons.
