The course aims to illustrate the technologies underlying the Internet network: basic principles of communication, reference architectures, main protocols of the TCP / IP stack, static and dynamic routing techniques, natting operations, principles of security and dynamic configuration of hosts connected to the Internet.
Knowledge and understanding:
The aim of the course is to provide the student with the knowledge and understanding of the operating principles of the Internet network, of the main Internet applications and of the reference technologies.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
The aim of the course is also to enable the student to apply his/her knowledge and comprehension skills to: analyze the configuration of a local and WAN network, understand the functioning of a device connected to the Internet, analyze the basic behavior of a router, and analyze the architectural configuration of a small network.
Autonomy of judgment:
The skills acquired by the student will enable him/her to assess the potential performance of the a communication network.
The didactic approach and the methods of ascertaining the knowledge acquired will accustom the student to communicate the concepts and methods learned, as well as to formalize the problems in terms of protocols used and related configurations and to discuss the relative solutions to specialist and non-specialist people.
Students will have the ability to connect the contents learned during this course with those in other courses belonging to the Information Engineering area.
There are no necessary prerequisites in terms of specialist knowledge.
Only basic knowledge of electronic calculators is required.
ISO OSI and TCP / IP layered models: representation of network functions according to the ISO OSI and TCP / IP layered models; functionalities of every level, from the physical to the application ones.
Main protocols of the Internet network: Ethernet, IPv4, IPv6, TCP, UDP, DNS, DHCP, ARP. Particular importance will be given to the operating principles and to the reasons that justified their development and dissemination.
Routing in IP networks: router functionality, static routing, routing algorithms, routing table. Configuration of routing parameters.
Configuration of the main aspects of security, configuration of network devices in automatic mode and natting operations.
The teaching is organized in a traditional way with the use of slide lectures and exercises through the use of emulators and network simulators . Presentation activities are also organized by the students of additional topics assigned to them during the course.
To meet specific educational needs related to the epidemiological situation, live streaming lessons or recordings of the same available online are expected to be provided. Furthermore, the exercises can be carried out through forms of remote interaction with the available IT tools.
Verification of learning
For those attending the lessons and the labs, the evaluation is carried out through two tests that are held during the intermediate test week (the first one) and just at the end of the semester (the second one). These two tests consist in the tests about parts of the Cisco Netacad CCNA course. Both these tests are made of around 30 questions with multiple answers that last for one hour each. Some of these questions request to solve short problems related to the configuration of IP systems. In the same week of the second test, an oral test will be carried out. The final score is based on the average of the two scores achieved with the two intermediate tests and possible corrections based on the oral test outcome.
For those that do not attend the lessons, the exam consists in a written test (two hours) with 16 questions with multiple answers and four exercises. After one week an oral test will be held to verify the knowledge that resulted from the written test and to further examine some aspects.
