Objectives
The objective of this unit is to provide basic knowledge related to network services, trasmission, transfer modes, wide area networks, local networks, and network protocols.
Knowledge and understanding: the student will acquire the basic knowledge for the analysis of a wide area networks and local area networks.
Applying knowledge and understanding: the student will learn how to design simple communication networks and how to configure network devices.
Prerequisites
Mathematics, Basic concepts related to the binary system.
Contents
Network structure and network services.
Data transmssion.
Transfer mode, Multiplexing, Circuit-switched and packet-switched networks, Protocols architectures, OSI, TCP/IP
Wide area networks: Error control protocols (S&W, GBN, SR). Protocol efficiency. HDLC.
Local area networks: Access protocols, network topology, IEEE 802, IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet), CSMA/CD.
Virtual circuit networks: X.25, Frame Relay, ATM.
Practice excercise: Introduction to Cisco Packet Tracer network simulator.
Teaching Methods
