At the end of the course it is expected that the student has developed:

1 • basic knowledge of mechanics and thermodynamic, and a capacity to focus the related physical issues, mainly those relevant to engineering (in agreement with item A in the Dublin Descriptors reported in the PQA).

2 • the capacity to apply the above knowledge to solve quantitatively some simple problems of mechanics and thermodynamics (in agreement with item B in the Dublin Descriptors reported in the PQA).

3 • the capacity to understand the information on a given problem of mechanics and thermodynamics and introduce simplification for its solution (in agreement with items A and C in the Dublin Descriptors reported in the PQA).

4 • the capacity to describe mechanics and thermodynamics issues adopting a correct terminology (in agreement with item D in the Dublin Descriptors reported in the PQA).

5 • the intellectual instruments of mathematics and physics necessary to be able to address general scientific problems and successfully following the subsequent courses in physics, applied physics and engineering (in agreement with item E in the Dublin Descriptors reported in the PQA).

Verification of learning

Written examination/oral examination/partial examination during the course.

The written examination aims to evaluate the basic knowledge of the student in the fields of mechanics and thermodynamics (item 1 of the listed aims of the course). The evaluation is achieved on one side by proposing a series of simple problems, which require a quantitative solution (item 2 of the listed aims of the course), and, on another side, by reading the terminology adopted by the student when describing the meaning of a given physical quantity or a given physical law, related with mechanics and thermodynamics (item 4 of the listed aims of the course). When facing the quantitative solution of the problems, the student must also show the capacity of using the known data of the problem, as well as developing the required steps to be able to solve the problem (item 3 of the listed aims of the course). The aforementioned capabilities (item 2, 3, and 4) have the same weight when establishing the mark (reported in units of 30th) associated to a given exercise and question. In order to achieve the highest mark (i.e. 30/30 cum laude), the student must show to have acquired excellent capabilities in dealing with all the mentioned aims.

The oral examination occurs upon a request of the students who already obtained a sufficient mark (i.e. at least 18/30) during the written examination and who aims to upgrade their grade (of course the net result can also be a downgrade of the grade). The exam is focused on general questions related to mechanics and thermodynamics, with a specific emphasis for the theoretical foundations.

Provided the general conditions, as well as the specific needs of the course, will suggest the possibility to perform them, the partial written examinations (one at mid-course mainly focused on Kinematics and Dynamics and the other one immediately after the end of the course, focused on the remaining part of the program of the course) are organized in order to allow the students of evaluating the individual level of acquired knowledge in parallel with the development of the course.

The combination of the grades of the partial examinations (in case they will be set up) can lead the students to automatically pass the final examination.
