Objectives

Objective of the course is to provide students with the knowledge needed to design, dimensioning and construction of road infrastructure. Therefore, it addresses all the issues regarding the design of horizontal and vertical alignment and cross section of a road.
• Knowledge and understanding: the aim of the course is to provide knowledge of the techniques and rules of designing a road infrastructure as well as the theoretical know how to evaluate its performances.
• Applying knowledge and understanding: it will be given the knowledge so that students can develop strong analytical skills that will allow them to solve problems that arise practicing profession, critically analyzing each time the best solutions for any intervention and / or improvement;
• Making Judgments: Student will be able to justify the design choices arguing them taking into account both the technical and economic aspects that they entail.
• Communication skills: Students will be able to write short reports in the form of exercises correctly adopting the terminology. In addition , they will be able to graph, on an appropriate scale, designed elements. Students will acquire the ability to communicate, express and support, both orally and in writing, the issues concerning the subject matter of the course also interlocutors who are not specialists.
• Learning skills: The student will learn methods and tools as well as sources for the continuous self-updating so that they can operate in the presence of complex situations and in the presence of technical uncertainty and incomplete information.

Prerequisites

The student is required to know the basic disciplines of civil engineering, it is essential that he knows how to read a technical paper and so he must have the basics of Topography. The prerequisites established by the Degree Programme Board are: Theoretical Mechanics and Structural Mechanics, although the latter refers particularly to the Geotechnical module, which is integrated with the one in question.

Contents

1. The levels of design provided by Codice Appalti (7 hours lecture)
2. Notes on the traffic characteristics and levels of service (2 hours lecture)
3. Mechanics of locomotion: basic notions (5 hours lecture)
4. Horizontal alignment of roads (35 lecture hours, 4 hours tutorial)
5. Vertical alignment of roads (4 hours lecture, 1 hours tutorial)
6. Roadway (2 hours lecture)

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 60 hours of lessons scheduled in the second semester of the third year of the degree course in Civil Engineering. They are distributed in 55 hours of lectures and 5 hours of tutorials.
A few hours of lectures are devoted to seminars led by experts.
The exercises can also be developed by groups of two students and are assigned and explained at the conclusion of specific topics covered during the lectures. The text of the exercises is provided by the teacher and will be different for each group. The graphic part of the exercises can also be done through the aid of a CAD software

Verification of learning

Tests consists in oral exam during which topics covered during the course are requested. Students can take the oral exam only after having drawn up and corrected by the professor assigned exercises. The exercises are tools to evaluate student's ability to apply acquired knowledge.
Students should demonstrate knowledge of design rules and techniques for the construction of road infrastructure as well as the theoretical knowledge to evaluate its performance.
The acquisition of skills assessment may include the discussion of the above exercises carried out by the candidate. The final assessment is expressed in thirtieths and for passing the exam students must demonstrate that they have acquired sufficient knowledge of the fundamental subjects of road design and requires a vote not less than 18/30.
Instead to achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must show that it has acquired an excellent knowledge of all topics covered during the course.

More Information

During the course, bibliographical references are provided for each topic covered. During the lectures,for some topics of descriptive character, slides that are available on teacher's web site are projected . The texts of exercises are always available on the same site, while during the hours of the course the track to solve them is provided.
