Objectives

Knowledge and understanding:
Systemic approach to the study having as track the topics of the lectures.

Knowledge and applied understanding:
Transfer the theoretical knowledge to the final design of parts of the building broadening and deepening the arguments.

Making judgments:
Critical awareness of the complexity and problems inherent in building design.

Communication skills:
Spur to the direct participation both during the exercises and the lessons to form the habit of verbal communication as well as written.

Ability to learn:
Formation of a method of research and learning to allow, during the profession, to better perform the tasks assigned.

Contents

LECTURES (total approximately 30 hours):

1) Architectural envelope , construction equipment and building system. (2 hours)
Building system: functional and constructive relations. Building components, basic building elements, basic materials. Building envelope subsystems: load-bearing structure, filler walls, roofs and floors, partition walls, stairs, installations, finishing.
2) Law 13/89 e il D.M. 236/89. (1 hour)
Accessibility, visibility and adaptability conditions. Removing of architectural barrier.
3) Energy saving . (1 hour)
Law n° 192 of 2005 and 311 of 2006. Short brieth about general aspects of energy saving, in existent building as well as in new building.
4) Foundations. (2 hours)
Soils and their features. Type and classification of foundations.
5) Building components and relatives construction processes. (4 hours)
Wall types, materials and mortars. Building elements and static connections with other components.
Building rules. Stone masonry, clay bricks and blocks.
Connection between building components and energy saving.
Balloon Frame building system.
6) Drainages and crawl spaces. (2 hours)
The way of water trough the walls. Traditional and innovative typologies.
7) Intermediate floors. (3 hours)
Floors types in according to the materials. Building elements and static connections with other components.
8) Roofs. (4 hours)
Flat and pitched roofs. Connection between building components and energy saving. Green roofs.
9) Fixtures. (2 hours)
Fixtures types. Materials and energy saving. Dynamic and static glazing. Fixtures order.
10) Plasters (2 hours)
Types and materials. Placing. Innovative plasters.
11) Stairs, lift and ramps. (1 hour)
Typologies of vertical connection. Building elements and static connections with other components.
View and design.
12) Installations (4 hours)
Law D.P.R. n°59 del 2009. Main installations in the residential buildings. Dimensional elements. Connections among installations.


PRACTICING (total about 30 hours)
To study two floors house for one family to build at an internal urban site.
Basic urban data and distributive plans are known.
Load masonry main building system within alveolar clay blocks.
Materials and finishing are assigned by professor to each group.
During the first practicing functional and dimensional aspect will be studied (also regarding Law 13/89), then to go on to the executive design of the systems and elements building.
Practicing is made with 3 students groups.

Teaching Methods

During the course the developed argument is:
The knowledge of the technical and construction aspects of the buildings.
The course is articulated by lectures and practicing. First ones are focused on the study of materials evolution, techniques and building elements, from traditional to the contemporary time.
Practicing regard the design of a residential patio building. Lectures are organized such as to give the basic know ledge for a right approach to the arguments developed during practicing.
The frequency is compulsory to the practicing meanwhile it is facultative, but strictly suggested, to the lectures.

Verification of learning

Written proof/oral proof/intermediate proofs.
A valuation ( in according on thirtieths) is given to the design studied during the course. All students must take the oral exam.
