Objectives

knowledge:
The course aims to give the students a good knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms of organic reactions and of the transformations between different functional groups. Students should also know the IUPAC nomenclature and the basic concepts of stereochemistry
Ability:
The students will be able to assign the IUPAC name and the configuration to the studied compounds. They must be able to correlate the reactivity of the compounds with the functional groups. He will also be able to identify and propose a logical synthetic route for the preparation of simple organic compounds.

Prerequisites

the students must have passed the final exam of General Chemistry I and Stoichiometry

Contents

ORGANIC MOLECULES: carbon atoms connectivity, chains forming, isomerism, elements on the chemical bond, resonance, polarity, intermolecular interactions.
NOMENCLATURE: (IUPAC) nomenclature of aliphatic and aromatic compounds with different functional groups.
STEREOCHEMISTRY: the chirality concept, chirality of the molecules with asymmetric carbon atoms, molecules with more than one diastereogenic atom, optical and geometric stereoisomers, conformational analysis.
COVALENT BOND AND CHEMICAL REACTIVITY:
ACID-BASE REACTIONS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS: Comparison of the acidity of organic compounds, use of pKa tables, the concept of conjugates acid and base.
REACTION MECHANISM: Reaction coordinate

Intermediate tests
written exam
oral exam
Both intermediate and final written tests will cover resolution of exercises on IUPAC nomenclature, stereochemistry, acids and bases and reactions of organic compounds. These tests are designed to prove the knowledge and ability to apply the concepts learned during the course
The first question in the oral exam will aim to test knowledge and understanding of some basic concepts of chemistry, such as resonance, protons acidity, connectivity of atoms in organic molecules. After this first phase, the student will be asked to illustrate a topic he like. Then he will illustrate the main reactions, put them in a general framework and make simple correlations between structure and properties.
