Objectives

The course aims to provide the following knowledge: nomenclature of organic compounds, interpretation and evaluation of the three-dimensional structure, physical properties and reactivity of organic molecules in general and particularly those of biological interest.
At the end of the course students should have acquired the awareness of mechanisms in organic and biological reactions.
The course aims to develop a self-learning process based on the text, supplemented by a wide range of appropriate nomenclature exercises, reactivity and synthesis of organic compounds.
In addition, one more purpose of this course is to approach the student in the understanding and knowledge of various instrumentation and the Organic Chemistry laboratory techniques.

Prerequisites

The student must have a solid basic knowledge of General Chemistry. In particular: atomic and molecular orbitals; chemical bond: ionic, covalent, dative, coordinative; acids and bases, pH, pKa; oxidation and reduction reactions.

Contents

The structure and the bond in organic molecules: the chemistry of carbon. Electronegativity and bond polarizazion. The ionic and covalent bonds: the structures of Lewis, inductive effect and mesomeric effect. The intermolecular bonds. Functional groups and IUPAC nomenclature. Stereoisomerism and chirality: representations of organic structures, symmetry features that determine chirality. Reactivity and synthesis of: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, ethers, sulfides, amines, nitro compounds, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, acid halides, amides, nitriles, aromatic compounds, heterocycles. Rules of conduct and safety devices in the laboratory of organic chemistry; general techniques of purification of organic compounds.

Teaching Methods

The course includes 56 hours of lectures with exercises; 24 hours of laboratory exercises.

Verification of learning

The examination includes a written exam about all topics of the course.
A written test about all topics of the program.
Final mark.
The final mark takes into account the following factors:
a) knowledge of the scientific language of Organic Chemistry;
b) ability to link the acquired knowledge within a logical framework;
c) ability to connect different pictures by finding common points in a coherent overall design.
Consequently, the mark may be:
a) Sufficient (from 18 to 20/30)
The candidate demonstrates that he has reached a superficial level of notions with many gaps; elementary level in linking logical and consequential topics; inadequate graphic expression skills.
b) Discreet (from 21 to 23/30)
The candidate demonstrates a discrete acquisition of notions, but a superficial understanding with some gaps. Acceptable knowledge of scientific language; acceptable graphic expression skills.
c) Good (from 24 to 26)
The candidate demonstrates a rather broad knowledge of notions, moderate in-depth analysis, few gaps; good knowledge of scientific language; good synthesis and graphic expression skills.
d) Great (from 27 to 29)
The candidate demonstrates a high level of knowledge of scientific language, a wide luggage of notions, with marginal gaps; remarkable expressive skills and a high level of knowledge of scientific language; high synthesis and graphic expression skills.
e) Excellent (30)
The candidate demonstrates a wide and deep knowledge, few irrelevant gaps; a strong attitude in making connections between different topics; great synthesis skills and great familiarity with graphic expression.
Praise is given to candidates well above the average and whose notional, expressive, conceptual and logical limits appear to be totally irrelevant.
