The course aims to provide a knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of molecular biology and biotechnology in order to be able to identify, formulate and solve complex problems applied to the biotecnologies sciences. The course will also provide the basics that can give the student the ability to understand the impact of technology and technical solutions in the biotecnologies context.
1. Indicator knowledge and understanding
The course is structured to allow students to acquire the basic knowledge of biological processes related to the human genome and the main systems of analysis of that. Such knowledge will also facilitate their comprehension of technological processes related to biomedical laboratories.
2. Indicator ability: apply knowledge and understanding
The setting of the course, with practical examples and applications, allow the student to apply knowledge in an appropriate and constructive manner.
3. Indicator: independent judgment
The teaching approach is designed to stimulate the capacity for autonomous analysis and judgment.
4. Indicator communication skills
The interaction between teacher and students and class tests facilitate relations among students and promote the development of communication abilities.
5. Indicator ability to learn independently
The student will be given the knowledge basis and the means to develop their independent learning abilities that could be verified by exam tests.
General and organic chemistry ,biochemistry
(6CFU, 48 hours)
Structure and function of nucleic acids DNA duplication, mutational and repair mechanisms; Gene transcription and regulation of gene expression in procaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. RNA slicing and processing. Protein synthesis and its regulation. Post-Translational Protein Modifications. DNA methylation and controlling chromatin structure. RNA interference Cell cycle and growth regulation; mechanism of posttrasdutional protein
laboratory (4CFU 48 hours)
-DNA and RNA extraction
-Electrophoresis of DNA: agarose gels and polyacrylamide gels
-Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
-PCR-Based Methods for Mutation Detection (reverse dot blot and allele-specific amplification)
-DNA cloning: restriction enzymes,restriction maps of plasmids, cloning vectors, expression vectors
-DNA analysis technologies: Classical methods for DNA sequencing and next generation sequencing technologies. Use of public databases in -omics sciences.
The course is divided into lectures (48 hours). Slides in Power Point format will be used.
Verification of learning
The exam, oral or written, will be passed by demonstrating that the follow objectives have been acquired: function and structure of nucleic acids in eukaryotic organisms with particular attention to the molecular processes regulating gene expression. It will be also evaluated the ability to apply the main techniques of Molecular Biology. After the exam, students will find at their site the vote and they could accept or not the indicated vote.
