The course provides basic knowledge about business administration, defining the main concepts, and describing the structural features and behavior of the different typologies of companies. This is achieved through examples and tutorials based on real-life business activities in the biotechnology industry.
The course analyses (through examples based on real accounting practices) the information system and the accounting method (double-entry bookkeeping) aimed at calculating the annual income and the working capital. Also, economic (e.g. cost accounting) and financial analyses (e.g. cash flow) are explained.
In line with Dublin Descriptors and the goals of the Bachelor degree in Biotechnology related with achieving knowledge and skills on firms’ business operations, the learning skills acquired at the end of the course can be classified as follows:
1) Knowledge and understanding. The course allows us to understand the main features of different typologies of companies, with a focus on their key accounting characteristics. The course provides basic knowledge of the accounting technical language.
2) Applying knowledge and understanding. The course provides a basic knowledge of financial accounting and double-entry bookkeeping as well as economic and financial analysis, applied to real business management cases.
3) Making judgements. During classes, students are asked for problem-solving and decision making and to formulate independent accounting judgments, with the help of real business management cases.
4) Communication skills. Students are called during classes to discuss the appropriateness of suggested concepts and methods. Communication skills are developed with the written exam that requires students to provide coincese answers.
5) Learning skills. The course develops students’ skills that are preliminary to work in companies in the biotechnology industry.
The course requires basic computational knowledge. Moreover, as ‘useful’ prerequisites, fundamental mathematical skills are required. Knowledge and understanding achieved through the high-school are considered as a proper basis to attend the course.
FIRST PART: MAIN BUSINESS AND ACCOUNTING CONCEPTS

- Basic notions of companies’ groups and aggregations
- Introduction to business management
- Main phases of business management
- Economic and financial aspects of business management

- The concepts of efficiency and effectiveness

SECOND PART: DOUBLE-ENTRY BOOKKEEPING, ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL ANALYSES AND BUDGET
- The accounting system and the role of the administrative area
- Double-entry bookkeeping: logic, definition and main goals
- Main components of annual income and working capital
- The concept of economic capital
- Main different cost’s typologies
- The analysis of the costs’ economic convenience
- The system of economic and financial key performance indicators
- The budget
The course is scheduled in 48 hours overall. Lessons are both theoretical and practical. Teaching will be provided both in-class and online. Students can opt for attending the lecture in-class or online.
Verification of learning
Students’ preparation is verified through
1) A preliminary multiple-choice questions quiz;
2) A written exam, related with open questions and exercises
Note. Students need a passing grade in all the parts of the exam.
In line with the Dublin Descriptors, the evaluation process aims to verify:
1) ability to understand and explain the main financial accounting concepts and economic and financial analyses;
2) capacity to express the accounting and business facts and to relate them to real cases. The ability to apply the accounting method (double-entry bookkeeping) and economic and financial analyses.
3) clearness in the evaluation and description of accounting operations and business management facts;
4) capacity of synthesizing the main definitions and representing them through real business management cases.
5) theoretical and basic practical knowledge to be developed in the biotechnology industry.
Final mark is expressed through a 30-point scale. A pass mark ranges:
- from 18/30: if the student shows a sufficient level of knowledge, that is he/she can at least identify the main accounting and business facts and operations, knows the basic double-entry bookkeeping elements and the basic economic and financial analyses.
- to 30/30, eventually cum laude, if the student can schematize and apply in a logical, coherent, and detailed way the financial accounting knowledge acquired during the course and to understand the logic of double-entry bookkeeping and economic and financial analyses comprehensively.
Both students attending the course and those not attending are recommended to study the following books:

Additional material and further readings will be provided during the course through the course website. Moreover, some practitioners’ seminars may be organized during the course to understand the practical implications of the topics.
