The student will acquire a knowledge of the main authors and the main literary movements related to the German language area as well as some of the most significant Bildungsromane.
The student will acquire good critical skills that will enable him/her to orientate him/herself autonomously in the historical, cultural and literary context of the German-speaking countries, from the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries (Module A, 30 h) to the Twentieth and Twenty-first centuries (Module B, 30 h). The student will also be able to carry out independent analysis and investigation of German literary texts, to connect them to their historical and cultural contexts and to identify themes and motifs typical of each literary age.
The student will be able to use autonomously critical texts and to evaluate their use in the analysis of a literary work.
The student will also be able to communicate his/her analysis through a short paper and / or a class presentation.
A basic knowledge of German literature will finally allow the student to critically undestand literary and critical texts related to other historical-cultural contexts and literary themes.
Students should have:
- a general knowledge of the main historical, social and cultural phenomena that have affected European countries since the late Eighteenth Century;
- the ability to synthesize and discuss the form and the contents of literary and critical texts;
- a basic knowledge of the German language.
The course is dedicated to: "The Bildungsroman in German-speaking countries ".
The course will provide an overview of German literature from the late Eighteenth and the Nineteenth centuries (Module A) to the Twentieth and the Twenty-first centuries (Module B) through the analysis of authors and texts representative of the social, economic, political and cultural reality of the time.
The first part of the course (Module A, 30h) introduces to the genre of the Bildungsroman and its characteristics. This genre will be analyzed in the light of the major German works written in relation to the major historical, social and cultural phenomena of the Nineteenth Century.
In the second part of the course (Module B, 30 h) we will analyze Bildungsromane related to the social, political and cultural climate of the time.
During the lessons, the texts will be related to their historical, cultural and literary contexts, and will be analyzed through a rhetorical, stylistic, thematic and cultural perspective.
Part of the lectures will be dedicated to the analysis of selected texts addressing the theme of the course. Some passages from a selected corpus of works will be commented also to illustrate the different literary movements examined.
The course is taught in Italian. The teaching activities will be distributed between lectures (focusing on literature in German language) and seminars (analysis of a corpus of texts related to the topic of the course). The teaching activities will be provided according to methods foreseen by the Manifesto Generale degli Studi, A.A. 2020/2021, p. 12. Texts will be discussed through an interdisciplinary perspective. In specific cases, language issues offered by original texts and Italian translations will also be taken into account.
Students will be also encouraged to write a paper related to the topic of the course and discuss it in class. This work will be evaluated in the final exam. Students will be involved in discussion and dialogue, in order to strengthen their hermeneutical skills. Any proposals for further enquiries or debate are welcomed.
Verification of learning
During the lessons, students' level of learning will be tested at least once with an „open response“ test. Students can also write a paper related to the topic of the course and discuss it in class. This work will be evaluated in the final exam.
In particular, students are required to demonstrate:
- their knowledge of the topic of the course, of the historical and literary contexts of the period covered during the course; this will be evaluated with a score ranging from 1 to 16.
- their ability to provide an accurate analysis of the texts in the syllabus and to relate them to their historical, social and cultural contexts; this will be evaluated with a score ranging from 1 to 10;
- their ability to construct an articulate, interpretive and critical discourse, and to draw comparisons with other literary and / or artistic works and / or other disciplines (they can choose to write a paper that will be presented in class); this will be evaluated with a score ranging from 1 to 4.
The total of the above-mentioned marks will constitute the overall examination mark.

Non-attending students are asked to contact the teacher to receive more information about the exam. They will be required to provide an in-depth critical analysis of the artist’s novel through a selection of critical texts provided by the teacher.
The program may be subject to some changes during the lessons.
Students who want to attend the second exam in German Literature are kindly invited to contact the teacher before attending the lectures and/or the exam.
