Objectives

knowledge of the main lines of evolution of the French literature; recognizing the main literary genres and movements, by studying relevant texts and authors ans setting them in their historical and cultural contexts; critical approach to studying literary texts.

Prerequisites

basic knowledge of literature, written comprehension of short literary texts in French.

Contents

Realism and naturalism in the nineteenth-century French novel, from Stendhal to Zola.

Teaching Methods

Lessons in classroom, mainly in French, with discussion on the subjects.
Due to Covid-19 emergency, lessons might be held in streaming and might be recorded in order to be available online.

Verification of learning

Oral exam in Italian and French during which the student should demonstrate
- knowing the selected works and placing them in their genres and historical and literary contexts
- knowing the main contents of the course, especially the main literary movements concerned
- using an appropriate terminology.

Texts

a) three of the following novels, in French or in translation; alternative choices will have to be approved by the teacher :
Stendhal, Le Rouge et le noir; Sand, Indiana; Balzac, Le Père Goriot or Eugénie Grandet; Flaubert, Madame Bovary; Goncourt, Germinie Lacerteux; Maupassant, Bel-Ami or Une vie; Zola, L’Assommoir or Germinal.

b) One of the following handbooks :
Il romanzo francese dell’Ottocento, ed. by Anna Maria Scaiola, Roma-Bari, Laterza, 2008, (chapters III, IV and V, pp. 37-134); Xavier Bourdenet, Le réalisme, Paris, Gallimard, 2007.
