Objectives

Students will be provided wit a general introduction to the Semitic languages. They will be invited to focus mainly on the concepts regarding linguistics, history and culture related to the Arabic language from its origins until nowadays.

Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of at least a Semitic language is highly recommended (Arabic or Hebrew)

Contents

General introduction to Semitic linguistics; geographical placement of the Semitic languages; chronology; grammatical features.

The Semitic languages in a diachronic perspective; an analysis of the genetic kinship of Arabic with the other Semitic languages.
The Semitic languages and the Chamito-Semitic languages.

Subjects will be distributed as follows:
1. Classification and history of the Semitic languages.
2. The Semitic languages between the IIIrd and the Ist millennium B.C.
3. The Semitic languages after the Ist millennium B.C.
4. Phonological and morphological features: phonetics, radicals, noun typology, gender, number, declension, conjugation.
5. The writing systems.
6. Chamito-Semitic.

Teaching Methods

Frontal classes.

To meet specific educational needs related to the epidemiological situation, there is also the possibility of live streaming classes.

Verification of learning

Oral exam in which student will be invited to prove her/his knowledge about the general setting of Arabic in the Semitic languistic and cultural context.
