Objectives

The course aims to guide students in their development of awareness of language acquisition processes.
At the end of the course students should be able to analyse interlanguage extracts, recognize the acquisition level of learners taken in consideration and they will be aware of linguistic and extra-linguistic factors that influence the learning process.
Morphological and syntactic structures common to learners of different languages and their strategies will be taken into consideration. Theoretical explanations of second language acquisition phenomena will also be presented.
Reflection on one's own language acquisition processes will be guided, as well as attention will be pointed on those elements that play a positive role in the development of the language competence.
Some consideration will finally be made on some L2 teaching proposals, in light of the language acquisition research outcomes.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites. Frequence of a course in general linguistics is recommended.

Contents

The course intend to provide students theoretical notions and practical instruments for the analysis of the language acquisition process of a second language.
At the end of the course students should be able to analyse interlanguage and diagnose the corresponding interlanguage level. They will also be able to identify, in relation to specific contexts, internal and external factors that influence the acquisition process, and what can be done in teaching language.

Written exam.
Assessment will be on lecture contents and on the books in bibliography.
Students should show to be able to analyse interlanguage texts, recognise the acquisition levels of learners that will be taken in consideration, and should show to be aware of linguistic and extra-linguistic factors that influence the acquisition process.
