For a Rhetoric of the Character
There’s nothing more artificial than the literary character, and yet the character is the element we mostly rely on whenever we make sense of a literary text. Moreover, the character is symptomatic of the development of literary genres and modes; it also shows how literature is shaped by historical factors such as the spread of the book trade, the rise of criticism and the growth of mass society and modern capitalism. The course aims at showing how in eighteenth century England, overcoming widespread prejudices against the novel as a genre, the character becomes an exhaustive expression of the social conditions underlying the breakthrough of modernity, for later epitomizing a world of rapid and violent industrial development in Dickens’ London. With Virginia Woolf realistic certainties fade away in the modernist maelstrom of the stream of consciousness, and Calvino’s postmodern novels with their flamboyant prose eventually deconstruct our die-hard faith in the character.
