Course Curriculum CFU Length(h)


The course aims at providing students with the linguistic and the metalinguistic knowledge and competences of German language and culture. More specifically,

- Students will have to achieve a written and oral linguistic competence at the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (cfr.
- Students will be able to define the functions and categories of German grammar from morpheme level to sentence level, and to examine the structure of words, phrases, clauses and sentences.

- Students will be able to understand and describe the metalinguistic and textual features studied during the course and apply them to the analysis of texts;
- Students will have knowledge of the theoretical tools for linguistic analysis and the specialised language and terminology of the discipline (metalinguistic competence), especially concerning the word formation (Wortbildung) and syntax of German;
- Students will be also able to compare and describe the differences between German and Italian, particularly regarding morphology and syntax.
- They will have an adequate knowledge of German history, geography and culture (Landeskunde).
- Within the B1 level (according to the CEFR), they will be able to interact in German in different communicative contexts;

- Students will distinguish, among the theories studied, the most appropriate ones to analyse texts.
- They will evaluate contexts and choose the most effective communicative strategies.

Students will:
- understand texts and conversations in German;
- effectively and efficiently convey information and ideas (at the B1 level);
- discuss and present in German some of the metalinguistic issues studied.

Students will acquire those tools, which will enable them to autonomously study and increase their linguistic and metalinguistic skills in the German language and culture.


A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Students must have already passed the exam “German Language 1”.


Theoretical part:

Morphology: (description of the morphological structure of a word, word formation - Wortbildung: Zusammensetzung, Ableitung, Konversion etc.);
Syntax: Haupt- und Nebensätze, Subjunktoren und Konjunktoren, Satzarten, Satzarten: Aussagesatz, Fragesatz, Aufforderungssatz, Wunschsatz, Stellungstypen: Stirnsatz (Verberstsatz), Kernsatz (Verbzweitsatz), Spannsatz (Verbletztsatz).Satzglieder. Umstellprobe. Ersatzprobe. Ergänzungen und Angaben.
Satzklammer und Stellungsfelder: Vorfeld – Mittelfeld – Nachfeld. Ausklammerung.

Teaching Methods

- Practical classes (lettorato, 91 hours taught by a mother-tongue German instructor)

Attending lectures and classes is not compulsory but is highly recommended.

Verification of learning

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: combined written and oral tests.

1) The written examination will include: Part 1 (lettorato): a) Grammar exercises (only for students, who don’t attend classes as well as for students, who have failed both Mid-Term Assessments); b) a summary (Zusammenfassung);
Part 2: questions and exercises about the theoretical part (linguistics).

The use of monolingual dictionaries will be permitted only for the “Zusammenfassung”.

2) In the oral examination students will be invited a) to discuss in German about the contents of a short text, which they have to read before the test. The text will be about German history, geography and culture (Landeskunde, contents have to be found in
b) to comment upon their written tests and discuss about the theoretical part.

3) For attendant students it is high recommended to write a brief report (Schreibaufgabe) about one of the topics, which is to be found on the lecturer’s home page. The Schreibaufgabe is compulsory for non attendant students.
4) Two mid-term assessments will be organised (Grammatikteil). Only those students, who will regularly attend the lectures, will be entitled to take the mid-term assessments.

Assessment criteria

Written test:
- Linguistic competences foreseen in the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
-Grammar and lexis;
- The lexicogrammatical accuracy of the summary;
-Students’ skills to understand a simple text;
- An adequate knowledge of the theoretical part (linguistics)

Oral test:
- The students’ acquisition of the German Language at the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the
- The ability to use the appropriate terminology in explaining contents (metalinguistic competence);
- Knowledge of the theoretical tools related to linguistic analysis and the specialised language and terminology of the discipline;
- The students will have to show that they have acquired the right terminology and concepts and that they can apply them to practical cases.
The final mark will be awarded on the basis of the level of learning demonstrated in each of the individual areas of analysis.

The vote is expressed in 18-30/30. To access the oral tests students must have obtained a minimum of 18/30 vote in the written test. To obtain 30/30 cum laude students have to demonstrate an excellent competence and knowledge of all the parts of the program.
