Literature and Geography.

As W.J.T. Mitchell contends, the description of a territory in fiction or in poetry can be seen as a process through which social and individual identities are formed. The story of this relationship between literature and geography has therefore progressively transcended the iconological tradition of painting aimed at disinterested contemplation in favour of literary texts that attempt to decode signifying systems forming an idea of landscape. Such systems can be identified as narrative typologies which include the sublime and the picturesque, the pastoral, the exotic and, more recently, those forms of un-natural sublime born out of artefacts or metropolitan conurbations. Relying on various sources, the course attempts to frame the relation between location and narration within a larger perspective, also catering to the recent theoretical acquisitions of geocriticism. Several experts will contribute to the class, including Prof. Bertrand Westphal from the University of Limoges (France) a world authority in the field of geocriticism, who, as a Visiting Professor in Cagliari, will help to open up new venues to the study of literature in its scientific, artistic, and political imbrications with geography.
