A) Knowledge and understanding
1) possess an adequate knowledge of the Italian language and of the linguistic and philological tools necessary for communicative processes and textual analysis;
2) be familiar with principles and concepts underlying metalinguistic analysis, language learning and communicative processes.
B) Applying knowledge and understanding
Students will be able to analyse and summarise linguistic issues, especially in the framework of interlinguistic contact.
C) Making judgements
Students will be able to identify and collect additional information in order to achieve a heightened awareness.
Students will be able to effectively communicate information and ideas, discuss problems and solutions, and choose ways and means of communication suitable to their interlocutor, both specialists and non-specialists.
E) Lifelong learning skills
1) be able to consult various bibliographic sources, both in Italian and in a foreign language, in order to gain new knowledge;
2) possess the necessary learning abilities to continue with their studies (e.g. Master’s degree courses).
In order to successfully take this course, students should already have the following competences: basic notions of Italian grammar.
The course will focus on Italian phonetics and morphosyntax.
Topics of the course:
- phones and phonemes;
- consonants, vowels and semivowels;
- diphthongs, triphthongs and hiatus;
- mobile diphthongs;
- graphemes and phonemes;
- phono-syntactic doubling;
- apocope and elision;
- sound loss and sound addition processes;
- Vulgar Latin phonology;
- flexive morphology;
- the pronominal system;
- the verbal system;
- Vulgar Latin morphology;
- coordination and subordination;
- cohesive and connective devices.
The course comprises traditional lectures during which a constant involvement of the students will be required, through oral questions and written exercises.
Out of the total 30 hours of the course, 24 will be dedicated to traditional lectures and 6 to exercises on the issues addressed during the lectures.
Verification of learning
The final exam will be an oral test in which students will have to prove that they have learned the core concepts of the course and that they are able to apply their knowledge to the analysis of actual texts.

Only the following topics out of Dardano’s manual are required: La fonologia (chapter 2), La morfologia (paragraphs 3.1-3.2.3), La sintassi (chapter 4, paragraph 4.5 excluded), La formazione dell’italiano (chapter 10).
