Objectives

This course aims to prepare students both theoretically and practically to understand the interpreted mediated interaction and to equip them with some basic interpreting skills between French and Italian, so that they can function as liaison interpreters in a range of settings.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of French language (minimum B2); excellent knowledge of Italian

Contents

As well as examining briefly the general theory of interpreting and the role of a liaison interpreter in both the private and public sector, the course will therefore consists of practical interpreting exercises and workshops in class to give greater confidence when interpreting in public, by helping them to develop basic abilities in listening comprehension and textual analysis of oral texts, providing them with the appropriate techniques for subsequently summarizing and formulating texts into French and Italian. Some basic notions of note-taking and simultaneous interpretation.

Teaching Methods

Classes will focus on the following skills:
Mental agility Memory development; Summary techniques; Sight translation; Boosting vocabulary and use of synonyms in both Italian and French; Interpreting formal and informal registers. Voice control Intonation and prosody; Image and speaking in public; Interpreting role-play; Development of basic note-taking techniques, Liaison Interpreting for business meetings, press conferences, etc.

Verification of learning

The assessment of interpreting is performed in a setting that is as close to a real-life situation as possible. The student will demonstrate his interpreting skills in french and italian. The assessment may include sight translation or consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.
