knowledge of the main lines of evolution of the French literature; recognizing the main literary genres and movements, by studying relevant texts and authors ans setting them in their historical and cultural contexts; critical approach to studying literary texts.


basic knowledge of literature, written comprehension of short literary texts in French.


The development of the French fiction from Classicism to the Revolution, with a focus on psychological analysis and the sentimental novel.
In the second half of the course, text analysis will be extended to the early 19th century French fiction, with a focus on the romantic conception of Plato’s androgyne and the sublimation of ideal love.

Teaching Methods

Lessons in classroom, including discussion on the subjects.

Verification of learning

Oral exam in Italian during which the student should demonstrate
- knowing the selected works and placing them in their genres and historical and literary contexts
- knowing the main contents of the course, especially the main literary movements concerned
- using an appropriate terminology.


a) Henri Coulet, Le roman jusqu’à la Révolution, Paris, Colin, 1967 (only the chapters concerning the periods and the texts included in the program: pp. 208-215, 223-232, 252-262, 286-288, 318-320, 352-364, 401-427, 458-467 and 471-482.
b) Three novels of different centuries (that is: one of the XVIIth century and two of the XVIIIth century, or viceversa), in French or in Italian translation, chosen among the following:

XVIIth century

XVIIIth century
