After attending the German Language I course (both the theoretical and the practical part) students will acquire:

- a written and oral linguistic competence at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
- an adequate understanding of the basic issues related to the different levels of linguistic analysis, with particular regard to phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax.
- an adequate knowledge of the theoretical tools for basic linguistic analysis (metalinguistic competence);
- an adequate knowledge of German history, geography and culture (Landeskunde)

Students will be also able to compare and describe the main linguistic differences between German and Italian.


A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages


Theoretical part:
Definition and theoretical foundations of the discipline
Phonetics and Phonology
Morphology: (description of the morphological structure of a word, verbforms, declinations, prepositions, etc.)
Syntax (Haupt- und Nebensätze, Konnektoren: Subjunktoren und Konjunktoren)
Contrastive analysis German-Italian

Practical part (lettorato):

Teaching Methods

- Lectures (20 hours)
- Practical classes (lettorato, 130 hours taught by a mother-tongue German instructor)
- Grammar tutorials

Attending lectures and classes is not compulsory but is highly recommended.

Two mid-term assessments will be organised (Vokabeltest).

Verification of learning

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: combined written and oral tests.

1) the written examination will include: Part 1 (lettorato): Grammar exercises, a reading comprehension test (Leseverstehen) and a short composition (Textproduktion);
Part 2: questions and exercises about the theoretical part (linguistics).

The use of monolingual dictionaries will be permitted only for the “Textproduktion”.

2) In the oral examination students will be invited a) to discuss in German about simple and routine tasks and to talk about German history, geography and culture (Landeskunde) b)to comment upon their written tests, particularly the theoretical part.

Two mid-term assessments will be organised (Vokabeltest). Both non-attendant students and those, who did not pass the test during the year, will do the Vokabeltest during the written exam.
Assessment criteria
written test:
- linguistic competences foreseen in the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
-grammar and lexis;
- the lexicogrammatical accuracy of the composition;
-students’ skills to understand a simple text;
- an adequate knowledge of the theoretical part (linguistics).

Students be allowed to skip the written test if they recently obtained an international certification of Goethe-Institut. Minimum level: B2.

Oral test:
- the students’ acquisition of the English Language at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
- the ability to use the appropriate terminology in explaining contents (metalinguistic competence);
- Knowledge of the theoretical tools related to basic linguistic analysis and the specialised language and terminology of the discipline;

The final mark will be awarded on the basis of the level of learning demonstrated in each of the individual areas of analysis.

Only those students, who will regularly attend the lectures, will be entitled to take the mid-term assessments (Vokabeltest).
