1) Knowledge and understanding.
Knowledge of the various meanings attributed to concepts such as culture, ethnocentrism and cultural relativism, ethnicity, race and racism, hegemony and subalternity, tradition and folklore, body and embodiment, implicit knowledge, social suffering and structural violence;
knowledge of the major theories and methods employed by anthropologists to understand socio-cultural aspects of human experience; knowledge of socio-cultural issues related to the theme of identity and various forms of racism.
2) Applying knowledge and understanding.
Know how to carry out analysis and synthesis of socio-cultural issues about the topics examined using the conceptual tools of the anthropological discipline;
develop a non-ethnocentric and non-hierarchical approach to different ways of living in human societies.
3) Making judgments.
Develop a reflexive awareness about the topics examined.
4) Communication skills.
Be able to use the basic specialized lexicon of the anthropologic discipline;
know how to clearly explain the issues of the course.
5) Learning Skills.
Be able to use the acquired knowledge and approaches for describing and analysing the socio-cultural phenomena.

The course aims at providing the knowledge of the major concepts and methodologies employed by anthropologists to understand socio-cultural aspects of human experience. Culture, ethnocentrism and cultural relativism, ethnicity, race and racism, hegemony and subalternity, tradition and folklore, body and embodiment, implicit knowledge, social suffering and structural violence will be the principal keywords to be analyzed. Particular attention will be paid to the processes of construction of identity and alterity, of the foreigner and of the enemy, to the forms of naturalization of differences and racism in modern and contemporary societies.

Teaching Methods

In order to meet specific educational needs related to the epidemiological situation, there is the possibility of live streaming lessons or their recordings available online.

Verification of learning

Assessment consists in an oral test in which the student is required to propose an in-depth study of his / her choice from among those the course, and to expose and argue on some of the issues proposed by the lecturer.
The evaluation of the student consists in an oral exam.
Through an interview the student must demonstrate of having achieved:
- knowledge of the main themes of the course;
- ability to apply the acquired knowledge by setting up a properly motivated and well-argued speech on a topic of his/her choice;
- ability of critical and methodological analysis.
- competence in the use the basic specialized lexicon of the discipline

Examination methods are the same for both attending and non-attending students.

In order to pass the exam (that means to reach at least the lower mark of 18/30), the student must demonstrate that he has gained sufficient knowledge of the arguments relating to the basics of the discipline and that s/he is able to apply theoretical notions to concrete cases.
To achieve a score of 30/30 with honours, the student must demonstrate that he has gained an excellent knowledge of all the topics of lectures and reference bibliography and that he is able to apply the theoretical notions to concrete cases, using the special language of the discipline accurately.
