Objectives

The course aims to provide the students with the basic skills for studying and understanding television and digital media through a historical, theoretical and also practical approach whose goal is to grasp some fundamental keywords and concepts about the evolution of audiviosual languages and new media.
Hence, the course pursues the following formative goals:

1) Knowledge and understanding
Acquire full knowledge and understanding of the television languages (formats, production, genres, audience); knowledge of the current television and multimedia landscape in light of the new media context; knowledge of the modalities of production and distribution of a television and multimedia product from an aesthetic and linguistic perspective.

2) Skills to apply knowledge and understanding:
Ability to analyse the whole languages and structure of a television product; ability to connect the various aspects of the media setting; apply the knowledge acquired in a critical and conscious interpretation of television and multimedia products, and the steps of their creation, production, distribution and access.


3) Independent judgement:
Ability to assess independently the usage of television languages and the modalities of production and sharing of the digital products; give critical opinions and assessment of television programs.

4) Communication skills:
Ability to analyse the television and digital contents using the proper language and terminology; ability to define the concepts in a clear and effective way, by means of examples and quotes, too.

5) Learning skills:
Acquire the competence and knowledge by applying a critical and dynamic approach, so as to apply them adequately and autonomously at the exam.

Prerequisites

Being a course based on the analysis and understandiing of contemporary media, students are expected to know the devices, languages and communication modalities deployed by the media. In order to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge, the viewing of a wide range of television programs and shows, tv series, web series, on general-interest tvs, pay-tv and Svod platforms (such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video).

Contents

The course will be divided into two modules of 30 hours each, during which the main contents will be introduced and discussed by means of explanatory audiovisual materials.

Studying television: from its early days to the convergence era

- Definition of medium; the importance of studying media in the current world;
- Introduction to Television Studies and main approaches;
- television history and birth of the Italian television;
- television textuality; tv as a text;
- the making of a show schedule;
- television genres; information and infotainment; fiction; tv series; talk shows; reality shows; i generi televisivi:
- Paleo and Neotelvision;
- television seriality;
- branded entertainment;
- case studies analysis.

The convergence era

- the infosphere;
- the convergent culture;
- complex tv seriality;
- transmedia storytelling;
- post-cinema galaxy and post-media condition;
- remediation and relocation;
- case studies analysis.

Teaching Methods

Lessons will take place on Adobe Connect platform; the television and audiovisual materials will be discussed during the lessons. Students are expected to take part to the discussion in a dynamic and fruitful way.

Verification of learning

Online oral exam on Microsoft Teams platform.

The volumes are available at Dante Alighieri Library, except "Complex TV" by Jason Mittell, which is only available in two libraries. All teaching materials will be uploaded to the professor's personal page. Any further materials will be provided during the lessons.
