Course Curriculum CFU Length(h)


The course aims to illustrate the basic principles of dynamic psychology of groups in its theoretical and application aspects. The focus of the course is is the promotion of the knowledge of the main psychodynamic theoretical models of groups. Particular attention will be put to the historical, epistemological and conceptual evolution of these theories and to the contributions that they offered for the understanding of the role exercised by the group relationships on the development of the self and on the individual psychic functioning. A part of the course will also be dedicated to the knowledge of the group as a clinical intervention technique.
The following knowledges, competences and abilities will be promoted:
- knowledge of the theoretical and methodological paradigms of psychodynamics of groups;
- knowledge of the main methods of observation and intervention on group relationships;
- competence in the application of the acquired knowledges for the purposes of observation and analysis of the dynamic processes involved in group relationships;
- ability to critically read the different theoretical paradigms and observation methodologies


It is important that students demonstrate a capacity for listening, understanding and critical reflection. Prerequisites are not required.


The following topics will be covered during the course:
- the main epistemological, historical and methodological references of group dynamics.
- the dynamic-clinical theoretical models which have analysed the connection between individual / group / community / institutions.
- the relationship group relationships and personal identity in order to reflect on the intrinsically plural constitution of the mind.
- the dynamic processes involved in group relationships within different contexts.
- the main group techniques used in the clinical and experiential settings
- group research methodology.

Teaching Methods

35 hours lessons
10 hours of exercises (analysis of films, analyzes clinical cases)

The lessons will be delivered in a "mixed" form (both in presence and online). At the beginning of the semester, each student may opt, with a binding choice, for face-to-face or distance teaching. Depending on the availability of the classrooms and the number of students who will opt for the face-to-face teaching, there may be a shift for classroom access.
The exercises can also be carried out through forms of remote interaction with the available informatic supports

Verification of learning

The evaluation of the student will be carried out through an oral examination in which questions related to the contents addressed during the course will be proposed.
The final mark will be attributed on the basis of the knowledge of the contents and of the topics covered during the course, of the expressive mastery and of the ability to organize an orderly speech and clear arguments ( through the use of an appropriate terminology, the ability to frame chronologically the contents discussed, the ability to critically elaborate the concepts studied and to apply them to specific situations and cases).
To pass the exam, therefore report a mark of not less than 18/30, students must demonstrate that they have acquired knowledge, skills and basic skills with respect to the topics covered. To achieve a score of 30/30 with honors, students must demonstrate that they have acquired knowledge, skills and excellent ability of all the topics covered during the course.

The presentation of the theoretical topics will be supported by the use of slides that will be made available to students at the end of the course. The hours of practice will also be supported by the use of video and other material (questionnaires, researches, clinical cases)

Students with special needs may benefit from a Disabled Office ( that certifies their difficulties in order to arrange individualized programs and can suggest specific learning methods.
