Objectives

Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course students will have to:
know and understand the history of medieval Europe from the end of the Western Roman Empire to the end of the Eastern Roman Empire (476-1453);
know and understand the technical terminology of the discipline;
know and understand the main traditional and electronic bibliographic tools used by the historians of the medieval world;
know and understand critically the different kind of sources (literary and documentary; written and iconographic) useful for the study of Middle Ages and the different methodological approaches required by their examination;
know and understand some elements of the history of Medieval Sardinia (political history; social and economic history);
know and understand some tools of the teaching of history (especially of medieval history).
Applying knowledge and understanding
The knowledge and the skills listed above will enable students to:
organize and realize didactic actions consistent with the skills acquired to be pursued with the specifics of the class group to whom they will be addressed to;
adopt teaching strategies appropriated to the needs of the different kind of students with which they will come into contact in the school;
confront themselves in the most appropriate way with other class teachers in programming and planning.
Making Judgments
At the end of the course students will know how to:
evaluate their own skills;
evaluate with autonomy of judgment the issues dealt with and the ideological positions contained in the medieval sources and modern historiography;
critically evaluate their own and others' didactic proposals;
acquire autonomous and critical reflection skills in relation to the different situations of professional practice.
Communication skills
At the end of the course students will know:
how to expose clearly the events of the History of the Medieval Europe, placing them within their chronological, geographical, political and social context;
how to expose clearly and critically the different kind of sources (literary and documentary; written and iconographic) useful for the study of Middle Ages.
Learning skills
At the end of the course students:
will have the means to undertake a work of constant and self-updating of their knowledge in the field of the discipline

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of the history and geography of the medieval world.

Contents

During the course (60 hours) will be outlined the history of medieval Europe (political-military events, institutions, administration, economy, society, religious aspects) from the end of the Western Roman Empire to the end of the Eastern Roman Empire (476-1453). Special attention will be given to:
the Roman-Barbarian Kingdoms and Byzantium
the XXIII and the early XIV centuries
the end of Middle Ages
XIII-XV century Sardinia in the Italian and Mediterranean context (political, administrative, sicual and economic history)
the history of Sardinia in late Middle Ages in the documents held at Sardinian and Spanish archives
the Sardinia of XIII-XV century (political-military, administrative, social and economic history);
the history of Sardinia..
Historical reconstruction will be carried out through the analysis of the different kind of sources (literary and documentary) available. The exposition of the main bibliographic and electronic tools useful for the study of medieval history is also foreseen.
The features of the teaching of history will be proposed during the discussion of the topics listed above and will cover:
historical understanding and childish stereotypes;
concepts and history learning;
the explanation in history;
history and programming;
selection and reading of the sources;
contextualization of the sources;
working in class.

Teaching Methods

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, guided tours to see medieval documental sources and manuscripts kept in the archives and libraries of Cagliari, with the active participation of the employees of these institutions (Covid-19 permettendo), and seminars organized by the professor (online: Zoom and MS Teams) The dates and times of the educational activities will be communicated in class.

Verification of learning

Assessment method
The evaluation of the student will be performed in an oral exam.

Attending students:
During the exam the candidate will have to answer to four questions. Three of the questions will concern the topics of the history of Europe and Medieval Sardinia (questions may also consist in the reading and commentary of some of the medieval sources included in the program). The fourth question will cover aspects of history teaching.

Non attending students
During the exam, the candidate will have to demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography given in the “Testi di riferimento (bibliografia per la preparazione dell’esame)” section, answering at least to four questions related to it.

Rules
The exam score is awarded by a vote expressed on a scale of 30.
The examination verifies the achievement of the objectives indicated in the section "Knowledge and understanding".

Principles
To pass the exam and achieve a score of not less than 18/30, the candidate must demonstrate a sufficient knowledge of the topics addressed to her/him during the test. To achieve the maximum score of “30/30 e lode” the student will have to show that she/he has acquired an excellent knowledge of the topics addressed to her/him during the test.
Adequately to the level of the course for the evaluation will be also taken into account

• the abilities of analysis and synthesis,
• the expressive language fluency and clarity
• the appropriate use of the disciplinary technical terms.

and the student's abilities to:
• present the arguments in a logical and coherent way,
• put them in an appropriate chronological and geographical context,
• estabilish links between the parts of the program,
use and read critically the medieval sources.

Texts

The students are advised to study from one of the following books, usually employed in secondary school: Montanari, Piccinni, Cardini-Montesano, Tanzini L.-Tocco F.P., Un Medioevo mediterraneo. Mille anni tra Oriente e Occidente, Carocci Editore, Roma 2020. The knowledge of specific aspects of Middle Ages history can be acquired through the study of the book Schena O.-Tognetti S., La Sardegna medievale nel contesto italiano e mediterraneo (secc. XI-XV), Monduzzi Editoriale, Milano 2011; and the essay Schena O., The kingdom of Sardinia and Corsica, in The Italian Renaissance State, edited by A. Gasperini and I.
