Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide an advanced theoretical and practical formation in the field of pedagogical disciplines, by means of historical-educational-pedagogical research. By the end of the course, the students should acquire the capacity to reflect autonomously and critically on cultural and educational phenomena.
Educational objectives in relation to the Dublin descriptors:
Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, students will know: the basic aspects of the history of educational thought and educational institutions in relation to cultural scenarios characterizing the great historical epochs. In particular they will know problems associated with the design, evaluation and management of educational activities as part of the thinking of the most representative pedagogues.

Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course students will have acquired basic historical and pedagogical knowledge needed to enter the study of contemporary social reality and the recognition of the educational demand. Such knowledge can be effectively used within the disciplines that deal more directly the issues involved with the design, management and evaluation of educational and training programs.

Communication skills
At the end of the course students will have developed the communication skills that will enable them to compete in the small and large group on achieved knowledges.

Learning ability
After completing the course, students will be able to access to the documentary sources and to learn independently.

Prerequisites

The possession of knowledge provided by a secondary school diploma or other qualification obtained abroad that is recognised as equivalent would be required.

Contents

Course title
Aspects of pedagogy and education in Italy in the first half of the 1900s.
Contents
The contents are organized around the following thematic areas:
a) object and problems of the history of pedagogy and education in relation to the cultural scenarios of Antiquity, the Middle Ages, Modernity and Contemporaneity;
b) 1. The pedagogical model of Italian neo-realism; 2. the pedagogical model of Christian spiritualism; 3. aspects of Gramscian pedagogy; 4. aspects of school education in the first half of the 1900s and pedagogical models inspiring school curricula; 5. aspects of non-formal education: periodic printing for children.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and exercises.

Verification of learning

Oral.
The examination may also include readings and the discussion of extracts from texts.
Examinations for proof of progression (written or oral) can be offered to students who regularly attend.

CRITERIA FOR THE ALLOCATION OF FINAL VOTE

a) For students who also support the ongoing evaluation

· Knowledge and understanding of the main authors from the beginning up to the Romantic Age pedagogy, including approaches and theoretical models
· Understanding of vocabulary and of appropriate terminology
· Ability to frame the arguments also in chronological and geographical sense
· Ability to associate concepts (eg. In events, authors, theories, historical periods)

oral exam:

· Knowledge and understanding of the main authors of pedagogy, from the romantic Age to the present day: approaches and theoretical models
. grading capacity of the main topics dealt
· Ability to frame the argument also in chronological and geographical sense
· Critical processing capacity of concepts
· Understanding and use of vocabulary and appropriate terminology
· Expressive mastery, also with reference to the discipline meta-language
· Ability to connect methods and strategies to the appropriate situations and contexts
· Ability to assess and justify the choice of strategies and methods


b) For students who only support the oral test
oral exam:



· Knowledge and understanding of the main authors from its origins to the present day: approaches and theoretical models
· Understanding and use of vocabulary and appropriate terminology
· Capacity to frame the argument also in chronological and geographical sense
· Ability to associate concepts (eg. to events, authors, theories, historical periods)
. grading capacity of the main topics dealt
· Critical processing capacity of concepts
· Expressive mastery also with reference to the meta-language of the discipline
· Ability to to connect methods and strategies to the appropriate situations and contexts
· Ability to assess and justify the choice of strategies and methods
