Knowledge and understanding: Students will be required to master the main notions of mathematics education and be acquainted with the main applications of maths to everyday life.
Applying knowledge and understanding: Students will be required to possess the skill to use workshop methods as applied to K-5 classes.
Making judgements. Students must acquire an autonomous and critical reflection on the course’s issues.
Communication skills. At the end of the course, students will be able to communicate information regarding the educational situations and the possible/feasible interventions.
Learning skills. Finally, students must acquire teamwork abilities for the implementation of group projects.
Students are recommended to take the "Fondamenti di matematica" ("Basic Maths") course before this one.
The course is divided into 3 teaching modules. The third module is a workshop module.
First module (30 hours, Francesco Paoli)
METHODS AND CONCEPTS. What is maths education? Constructivism and problem-based learning. Maths activites in kindergarten. Discovery learning in primary school.
THE CURRICULUM. Number sense. The four operations. Basic arithmetic facts. Place value. Multidigit arithmetic. Fractions and decimal numbers. Geometry and measure. Pre-algebra. Probability and statistics.
Second module (30 hours, Hector Freytes)
Maths and nature. Maths in art. Maths as applied to physics. Relevant examples of maths workshops.
Workshop (20 hours, Giuseppe Sergioli)
Teaching Mathematics by using the interactive whiteboard; the Analogic method of Camillo Bortolato; recognising problems of dyscalculia; the measurement process.
For each of the first two modules, taught classes will coexist with workshops. The workshop module, whose attendance is mandatory, will consist in groupwork, hands-on activities.
Verification of learning
First module: Optional open-question in-class test; oral examination. Students who get a pass in the in-class test are exempted from the final oral examination, unless they want to improve their marks.
Second module: Mandatory open-question in-class tests; report on a Group work; written resit for students who fail the previous test.
Workshop. A report containing some activities to practically propose at school and based on the topics showed during the first part of the laboratory.
Students will be required to demonstrate their mastering of the main notions of mathematics education, their acquaintance with the main applications of maths to everyday life, and the skill to use workshop methods as applied to K-5 classes.
The final mark will be given as a result of a comprehensive assessment of all the available material concerning each student: test and oral examination marks, workshop attendance, groupwork reports, active participation in classes, observation in workshops.
