Objectives

Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, students will have to:
know and understand Roman History from the beginnings of Rome to the end of the Western Roman Empire;
know and understand the disciplines theoretical bases and technical terminology;
know and understand the main traditional and electronic bibliographic tools used by historians of the Roman world;
know and understand with a critical approach the different types of sources (primary and secondary; ancient and modern; literary and documentary; written and iconographic) useful for the study of Roman History as well as the different methodological approaches to examine them;
know and understand some elements of Roman Sardinia history (political history; social and economic history);
know and understand some elements of Roman civilization.

Applying knowledge and understanding
The knowledge and the skills listed above will enable students to:
analyse issues, dynamics and historical processes of the Roman world;
recognize the legacy of Rome in the contemporary world;
analyse with a critical approach the different types of sources (primary and secondary; ancient and modern; literary and documentary; written and iconographic) useful for the study of Roman History;
organize and realize didactic actions consistent with the skills acquired and suited to the specifics of the class group they will be addressed to;
adopt teaching strategies suitable to the different needs of the students they will meet at school;
confront in the most suitable way with other class teachers in making programs and plans .

Making Judgments
At the end of the course, students will know how to:
evaluate their own skills;
evaluate with independence of thought the issues dealt with and the ideological positions contained in the ancient sources and in modern historiography;
evaluate with a critical approach their own and others' didactic proposals;
acquire autonomous and critical reflection skills in relation to the different situations of the professional practice.

Communication skills
At the end of the course, students will know:
how to present clearly the events of Roman History, placing them within their chronological, geographical, political and social context;
how to present, clearly and with a critical approach, the different types of sources (primary and secondary; ancient and modern; literary and documentary; written and iconographic) required in the study of Roman History.

Learning skills
At the end of the course students:
will have the means to undertake by themselves a constant effort to update their knowledge in the discipline field.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of the ancient world history and geography.

Contents

The course (60 hours) will outline the history of Rome (political-military events, institutions, administration, economy, society and religion) from the beginnings of the city to the end of the Western Roman Empire. Special attention will be paid to:
the transition from Monarchy to Republic;
the development of the Republican political institutions;
the expansion of Rome in Italy and in the Mediterranean area;
the civil wars;
the birth and the characteristics of the Augustan Principate;
the provincial system: Rome and Sardinia (political-military, administrative, social and economic history);
the evolution of the Empire, particularly under the Julio-Claudians, the Flavians, the Antonines and the Severans;
the transformations of Late Antiquity with special reference to the ages of Diocletian, Constantine and Theodosius;
some aspects of ancient Roman daily life.

Historical reconstruction will be carried out through the analysis of the different sources (literary and documentary) available. The presentation of the main bibliographic and electronic tools required to study Roman History will be considered as well.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with the use of multimedia and discussions about the topics covered (reading of literary and documentary sources).

Verification of learning

Assessment
The final assessment consists of an oral exam.

Attending students:
During the exam, candidates will have to answer to four questions regarding the topics of Roman History discussed during the course and those contained in the bibliography given in the "Testi di riferimento" section. Questions may also consist in the reading and commentary of some of the ancient sources included in the program.

Non-attending students
During the exam, candidates will have to prove an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography given in the "Testi di riferimento" section, answering at least four questions related to it. Questions may also consist in the reading and commentary of some of the ancient sources included in the program.

Rules
The exam score is awarded in marks out of 30. The examination verifies the achievement of the objectives given in the section "Obiettivi formativi/Knowledge and understanding".

Principles
To pass the exam and achieve a score of not less than 18/30, candidates will have to prove a sufficient knowledge of the topics addressed during the test. To achieve the maximum score of 30/30 cum laude students will have acquired an excellent knowledge of the topics addressed during the test.
In agreement with the level of the course, the assessment will also consider:

analysis and synthesis abilities;
fluency and clarity of speech;
appropriate use of the disciplinary technical terms.

and the students' abilities to:
present the arguments in a logical and coherent way;
put them in an appropriate chronological and geographical context;
establish links between the parts of the program;
use and read the ancient sources with a critical approach.

The program concerns the Academic Year 2019/2020.
